GlobalGiving's Recent Visit to PUSPEM in Indonesia

As part of our effort to maintain the high quality of projects on our site, GlobalGiving regularly sends long-term representatives into the field to visit our partner organizations and monitor the projects that are listed on GlobalGiving. Recently, GlobalGiving’s representative in Southeast Asia, Jacqueline Lee, met with PUSPEM’s team in Indonesia. You can read her postcard about their tree planting project here.

Although Jacqueline was able to verify that the PUSPEM’s tree planting project had taken place, PUSPEM created many obstacles that prevented her from visiting the organization’s two life skills projects. I have included her report about this visit below. As a result of this most recent interaction with PUSPEM in the field, GlobalGiving has decided to retire these two projects and discontinue our relationship with PUSPEM.

Jacqueline Lee's report on her visit to PUSPEM

Unfortunately, I was not able to visit PUSPEM’s project #2113, Life Skills for women in Bantul. I experienced push-back and difficulty in scheduling a site visit, which all GlobalGiving partners agree to in the Terms and Conditions of GlobalGiving. PUSPEM insisted that GlobalGiving provide $1,000 in order to pay for food, accommodations, and allowances for project beneficiaries. I was confused by this request given my understanding that the project beneficiaries were residents of the Bantul community. In addition, the project leader insisted that, should a site visit take place, he arrive before I do in order to “set things up”. As a result of these, among other obstacles, including a series of substantial misunderstandings between myself and the project leader, I was not able to visit the project to verify the activities described on the website.

Training to make batik clothes and make blankon (traditional hat) have long held by the mothers group of the earthquake victims in Kebon Agun, Imogiri, Bantul, Yogyakarta. Some mothers have been skilled in making blankon and make a batik shirt. The participants problem is; after the following the training they were unable to continue the remedy to make their own business because of the lack of venture capital.

The requirement is needed in this project;
A. 30 units of sewing machines
2. 2 units of embroidery machines
3. 1 unit of cloth cutting tools
4. Scissors and other tools 30 pieces
5. venture capital assistance.

We hope these life skills program can continue until the participants can be independent.

Assistance for Bantul Women

We have received a budget from GlobalGiving UK 1032 GBP and 106 USD from the GlobalGiving USD. This budget has been used to continue our program in Bantul Yogyakarta. One of the programs are implemented is giving of venture capital revolving.
Bu Sri said that venture capital revolving help us to improve our efforts in making clothes batik (Javanese traditional clothes) and a hat typical Java (blankon). Expected later this revolving venture capital in the period of 6 months will be moved to other participants who need financial aid this effort.
About 3 weeks from now (March 14, 2012) GlobalGiving Bonus Day, we look forward to the donors to participate in this Day Bonus program, so that we can continue this program in helping mothers and children victims of the earthquake in Bantul Yogyakarta Indonesia. We also hope you to tell your family, friends and colleagues to participate in this program.

In the year 2011 we have received a budget of $ 4,180 From donors. This budget has been used by us to implement our programs in Bantul in order to help mothers and children of the earthquake victims.

As for the programs that we have carried out;
1. Life skills for mothers (learn to sew make a traditional hat (blankon).
2. Free educational assistance for children such as tutoring (extracurricular lessons), kindergarten school.
3. Scholarships
4. Medical checkup
5. Additional nutrients for children
6. Food and beverages to poor families of the earthquake victims.

Children of earthqauke victims in Bantul

Dear The Donors

Education programs for children of earthquake victims in Bantul Yogyakarta has lasted about 3 years. Imogiri Bantul community are expecting this education program can continue because the education program is helping children of earthquake victims.
There were 10 participants protege our current scholarship aid is expected to be able to continue their education.

Therefore we humbly expect aid to the donors for their return to school.

On October 19, GlobalGiving.org is matching at 30% all online donations up to $1,000 per donor per project! There is $100,000 available in matching funds on Oct 19. Once these matching funds are used, no more matching funds will be applied. In addition to the 30% match, GlobalGiving is offering a $1,000 bonus to the project that raises the most funds that day and a $1,000 bonus to the project that receives donations from the most individual donors!

Ramadan Giving Program

Every month of Ramadan, we make Ramadan Giving Program, this is designed to help children get help and compassion from people feeding them and send them to school. Assistance they received, among others, milk, cakes, clothes and new pants and pocket money.

In addition children were also entertained by bringing them to the place recreation so that they can play and have fun together.

Nirmalasari one of the participants in this program say, I was greatly helped by the existence of this program.

As for the free education program in this project have not all be implemented because of budget constraints in this project.

We and all the children in the project say a big thank you for all the help and attention to this program.

Our kids also look forward to donors to continue to be able to help so that this project can continue

Education program that has been done in this project include;

But until now only TPA education programs are still ongoing.
The limited budget in this program, so learn to use a computer, learn English language should be abolished. besides library program also can not be fulfilled.

New skills for poor women

Program life skills (life skills) is an excellent program that we provide for mothers/ widowed earthquake victims in Bantul Yogyakarta. Unfortunately the program does not have enough budget to carry out all activities that exist in this project so that programs can only carry out some programs.
Bu sri said that at this time there are many mothers very interested in learning to make batik stone, but due to budget constraints, the program can not be fully implemented because it requires some sewing machines, materials and other equipment.
We still hope to donors to continue to provide assistance and attention so that this program can continue implemented. Thanks to GlobalGiving and donors who have provided assistance.

After several months of the program being held, we want to say that budget constraints have made it so that the program is run not in line with expectations. The kids certainly are looking forward to this free educational program continuing.

The Nature School

There are budget constraints in this project so we use the budget as efficiently as possible and on target. One of the programs we've made in this project is a nature school where children learn in the room open so that we do not need to rent a room to learn. The lessons that we provide in this natural school is the same before, such as previous tutorial (repeat school lessons), mental coaching for character formation of children, etc.- only coupled with the introduction of the environment so that children can recognize their environment. Amirah one child who participated in this program said; "I am very pleased with this nature school because we learned in the room open with a lot of friends." Thank you to all donors, so the program can be implemented. We look forward to the donors to continue to help provide assistance so that our program can continue.

Women & Children Training Project Site Visit

Bill Brower is a Field Program Officer with GlobalGiving who is visiting our projects throughout South and Southeast Asia. On March 21st he visited PUSPEM’s project for women and children in the sub-district of Bantul on the island of Java:

PUSPEM became involved in Bantul following the earthquake in Java in 2007, introduced to the community by a neighbor who was originally from there. In addition to handing out clothes, food and money to the affected community following the disaster, PUSPEM asked the community what longer term programs they would most value to help them recover and increase opportunities. Their response: supplementary education for children and life-skills training for women.

PUSPEM has taken steps to establish such programs, but it seems neither is fully achieving its aims at the moment. GlobalGiving funds were used to rebuild a family’s home, one room and a partially enclosed area of which were meant to house the children’s supplemental lessons. These lessons are now being held in a community center, and the family is fully occupying the house, including the partially enclosed area where they are raising rabbits. The community center is only available in the evenings, so few children are now able to attend because it is too far from their homes to travel home in the dark. In a group meeting with the children and PUSPEM, the kids said 15-25 are typically present at the biweekly sessions, out of the 50 the sessions are intended for. Andi, founder of PUSPEM, said if they had more money they’d like to build the family another home and rent the current house in order to hold the lessons there.

PUSPEM had also donated a computer and a sewing machine to the children’s project, but Andi was surprised to find them missing when we visited. He said the community had likely sold them, perhaps to buy food. While far from affluent, it did not appear to me that malnutrition was a problem in the community. Andi said PUSPEM would have to give them another computer.

For the women, PUSPEM brought in trainers from Jakarta to teach about sewing. In a group meeting we had with them, the women asked for more trainings; Andi said money limited that. PUSPEM had provided them a sewing machine, as well. Andi said the women preferred the seven electric machines provided by the local government.

PUSPEM ended our meetings with the children and the women by handing out envelopes with small amounts of money in them.

I believe GlobalGiving is the only funder for this project and the project has yet to receive a significant portion of its goal, so it is perhaps understandable that it is not yet firmly established, but thus far there appears to be little progress toward project aims.

Life Skills for Bantul Women of Eathquake Victims

There are 2 excellent activities in this program; 1. The empowerment of women widowed of earthquake victims The activity In this program is given training sewing to make traditional clothing (batik) and local traditional hat (blankon). Participants who took part in this training are 26 women who all were of an earthquake victims. Because limited budget, so this program does not continue. Therefore needed attention and assistance from all the donors so that this program can continue.

2. The empowerment of children of earthquake victims. In addition to providing vocational education to the mothers we also provide free educational programs for their children so that their children can obtain a useful education for them. Activities we provide to children include: a. Tutoring for elementary school children The materials we provide include Mathematics, English, natural science and social science.

b. Kindergarten school for kids The materials we provide; learning to read, learn to count, sing and sport together.

This activity still continue with support for insufficient funds

Besides the children hoping to re-learn the computer.

On March 21th, 2010, GlobalGiving staff "Bill Brower" has visited our location program Life Skill for Women and Children of earthquake Victims in Bantul Yogyakarta.

In this project there are two programs that we do; 1. Life skills for women (mothers) to make Bantul traditional clothes ( Batik and Blankon ). 2. Free education for children. Extracurricular lessons for children such as learning English, mathematics, natural science, social science, sports, etc.

The constraints in this project is the limited budget to fund coaches, purchase machinery and other equipment required in this program. However, we remain determined to carry out this program as possible until the mothers and children can live independently.

"International Women's Day is March 8, and to celebrate amazing and strong women, we wanted to tell you about all the great work we've been doing at PUSPEM Foundation" This is a short story from “Bu Par” earthquake victims in Bantul Yogyakarta Bu Par (56 years) is the widow of the earthquake victim in Bantul Yogyakarta. When the earthquake struck Yogyakarta and its surroundings in 2005, Mrs. par has lived alone since her husband and son had died falling house building in the earthquake. Now Bu Par have already opened sewing clothes business at home with the help of venture capital is obtained from PUSPEM Foundation. Previously Mrs. Par is a sewing teacher for the PUSPEM program "Life Skills for Java Women and Children of Earthquake victims". After earthquake Bu Par lived alone in a tent on the ruins of his home, his job is only to collect wood and then sold on the market. With results like that sell the logs are not sufficient to meet the needs of everyday life. Owned sewing skills can not be implemented because there was no venture capital to create a sewing business. But now Mrs. Par life much better with a sufficient income from the business at home sewing clothes. Many thanks to the donors who have helped us, still many people like me who need help from you.

Life skills for women and children of earthquake victim in Bantul By Andi Asriadi Summary Monitoring and Evaluation conducted Puspem on January 11, 2010 shows the life skills program that was implemented in Yogyakarta Kanten Imogiri till now still continue to happen, although with very little funds because many people are interested so that Puspem pressed to execute. So it is with English skills, many young children, both elementary schools (SD), junior high school (SMP), and High School (SMA) also continued to press, because they assume that this program is very useful that they gradually less able to communicate with the tourists from abroad in English language. As recognized by Sutima, sewing skills participants said, "Frankly I am very grateful to Puspem and GlobalGiving, for giving assistance sewing skills for free. Therefore, I hope this program can continue to be implemented and supported by GlobalGiving, because there are many people who are interested to participate. Growth Program Life Skills for Children In Bantul Yogyakarta

Program that executed by Puspem Foundation up to now get positive response from society Kanten village, Imogiri, Bantul, Yogyakarta. That thing marked because growth of child knowledge in area of English language, Mathematics, Natural sciences growing mounts seen from value each in school. Also children that have been learn in TPA experience of quite significant improvement, the average of child has been bright read Latin letter. Growth that either from children make society very hope if this program can continue accordance with child growth it self. In order to that's Puspem executes program, for example: (i) Purchasing of lesson books that related to child uplifting of skill; (ii) Purchasing of religion schoolbook in order to enter Holy Moon Ramadhan. This condition are conducted to help old fellow to educate children, improve child knowledge to some skills that related with child [the] future it self, instruct children to be more skillful to one membership area, children learn only at one place until easy controlled by their teacher and old fellow. Positive response that given society to program that executed is appreciation that must answered to in positive by Puspem. That is why this program must can be defended and executed in routine in order to educate children and uplift skill child to one membership area. We expect to GlobalGiving and the donors remain to give support that required in continuing this program.

Constraint and Problems As a whole free education program for children of earthquake victim in Bantul, Yogyakarta that is being executed since December 2006 until now not experience of constraint and problem. Even positive responds from citizen’s growing breathe life in toes for PUSPEM to continue the programs help families of earthquake victims in Bantul, Yogyakarta. The Other things, with program life skills that not walk with effective because supportive fund inexistence to continue this program. Nevertheless this program life skill in the future is expected can walk properly with fund support from donors GlobalGiving. 2. Result and Benefits 1. Improve spirit learn and ability comprehends lesson matter school each student 2. Stimulate ability thinking about effort develop lesson matter that taught by teacher to educate, until facilitate do problems 3. Children are educated very trained on how to discuss and ask lesson matter that not understood, until there is circumstantial understanding can help under consideration matter in common in school 4. Student Family (refugee of earthquake victim) feel very helped with implementation of this free education program, because children are educated that will sit in class bench III needn't again follows supervise learn on site courses that require expense that relative cost dear 5. Life Skills for Java Women’s of Earthquake Victims.

Earthquake that has knocked over Yogyakarta and its surroundings 2 year ago not even swallow soul victim but also destroy their house and good and chattel until as a consequence increase impecunious resident amount. Aid from international donors that minim make us to continue cope conduct efforts in order to help them especially for clan of widow mothers that has loosed husband and also children.

This Program is assumed of vital importance because mothers very requires kinds of expected skill later can help their family in opening new effort or become employees in several company that need skilled man power.

Besides mothers that given skill also age children 8 s/d 15 year will be given skill like learn operate computer, learn English language conversation, and some elementary skills will be given to them.

Progress report Life Skill for Children In Kanten Imogiri Bantul - Yogyakarta Introduction Some activities that till now are being walked: (1) Kindergarden school for kids (TPA); (2) English language course; (3) Ranch duck and chicken (4) learn to operate computer. Fourth activity that mentioned is society request, until PUSPEM act continue by lengthen program life skill that is pledge Puspem program. In consequence,, we can depict that growth of children knowledge that is learning in TPA really ether with excitements until there is no reason for PUSPEM continues program is referred. Moreover children old fellow is educated continued expect program TPA can be executed during that is not defined. That thing proved with children growth educated that growing increase. It is not next from Kanten village, but already much children from other countryside that intentionally come learn in TPA Kanten. The way said by Mr. Umar, devoted teacher consorts and teaches in TPA, that TPA that we construct this get confession from society. That is why much society from other countryside that entrust its child to learn a lesson here. For that We very hope this program can be continued .

Outcome (1) Growing of children knowledge about ethics (2) Stimulate children in order to love education and continued learn properly (3) Stimulate old fellow in order to continued push its child continues school (4) Stimulate government to help children education from family that unable to.

Follow-up Base fact reel from growth TPA that mentioned above, according to Mr. Ngatijo, one of child old fellow tells, that we very expect this program can continue. We as old fellow is very helped especially in elementary knowledge situating to education the importance controls one skill, like learn of English language, and other life skills.
