To Go To School or Not? We Have The Answer and Made The Difference

<img src='https://dpqe0zkrjo0ak.cloudfront.net/pfil/2291/children_at_December_Party_Small.JPG' alt='Children at December party'style='margin: 5px;'/>

Children at December party

Warm greetings

It's with joy that we share this report with you. This report provides a summary story of hope and change. In the year 2012, partly thanks to your support, following amazing things happened:

Thousands of pens and pencils, books, exercise books and other school materials were provided

Tens of children received scholarships and tuition assistance. This has enabled some children to go to school for the first time

65 youths received life-changing leadership training at a special conference

Personally, I can attest to the value of education and the role that education has played in my life. I have an graduate degree and this helped to prepare me for the roles I occupy today and also helped open many doors. I also strongly believe in on-going training and self-development. With this background I was particularly touched when I saw Joshua's video.

In this video, Joshua, the Director of Door of Hope, expresses thanks and appreciation to donors of Develop Africa and other organizations that have helped to provide scholarships to children in the Door of Hope community. He explains that the families of the children are so grateful for the kindness of donors. Because of and thanks to the assistance provided, some of those parents were previously unable to provide school fees for their children have now been able to send their children to school. Today their kids are going to school and some of them came first / took first place in their classes academically. This provision is truly wonderful.

Take a couple minutes to watch Joshua's thank you video.

So it was particularly heart-warming to learn that without our support, some children would not be in school today.
Our support made the difference and provided the answer to their need! Together we helped make change and school happen!

Thanks for helping us make change happen and send children to school!

<img src='https://dpqe0zkrjo0ak.cloudfront.net/pfil/2291/CHILDREN_at_doh_Small.JPG' alt='Children at Door of Hope'style='margin: 5px;'/>

Children at Door of Hope

Links:

Thank you video message from Joshua

Sponsorships from your generous donations continue to help children in Sierra Leone to forge ahead with their education and prepare them for a brighter future. Indeed without your sponsorship, many of these children would never have darkened the walls of schools, whiles very few would barely have made it at primary level.

Students and their families are deeply grateful to donors who have opened a door of hope for them. Indeed your sponsorship is a lifelong assistance to the children and Sierra Leone as a whole. May God richly bless you all as you strive to develop our children into useful citizens."

This report includes a photo of Janet - one of the rising leaders receiving sponsorship funds through this project. We are continually pumped and excited about being able to together help rising leaders like Janet forge ahead with their education. Our support is creating a definite and unchangeable bright future! It sure feels good to be a change maker! Nelson Mandela said, "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world".

Giving Tuesday: Have you ever heard about Giving Tuesday: #GivingTuesday will run on November 27, 2012 from 12:01 AM ET (what time in your city?) to 11:59 PM ET November 27, 2012. This year Microsoft is matching donations made to our microprojects - http://bit.ly/giveyouth by credit card or PayPal at 50% donations. This is a great way to invest in further change. Please join us and donate as early as you can on that date (after 12:01 am to ensure we secure matching funds.

Thanks so much for your support and best wishes.

<img src='https://dpqe0zkrjo0ak.cloudfront.net/pfil/2291/IMG_3543_Small.JPG' alt='conference trainees'style='margin: 5px;'/>

conference trainees

It's my pleasure to bring you a summary report from Develop Africa's first Forward Thinking and Creative Leadership Conference & Workshop - held in partnership with the Excellent Student Network International, at the British Council - July 2012.

The conference was well attended with a total of 65 students. Trainees came from different institutions such as Fourah Bay College, Institute of Public Administration and Management, College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences, etc. The conference was also attended by non-registered participants and included guests from all works of life including, the Justice Sector, the World Bank, Save the Children and several other distinguished guests.

Participants in the conference learnt through an interactive workshop and training about what Forward Thinking and Creative leadership meant. Through active interaction, engagement and collaboration, participants engaged in dissecting case scenarios of critical challenges facing the African continent and suggested best practices and consultative steps using the mind-set of a forward-thinking and a creative Leader.

Participants were divided into five distinct groups each presented with a set of facts that form a case scenario of a typical challenging issue confronted by Africa nations. Members of the group break-out and consultative sessions addressed the issues presented in the interactive case scenarios and reported their findings in the main conference auditorium in the afternoon session of the conference. Each group was presented with unique case scenarios to tackle and to make recommendations and best practices as Forward-thinking and Creative Leaders.

Dr. Jasmine Renner the conference facilitator and workshop speaker provided examples, characteristics and hands -on description of what a forward thinking and a creative leader is through interactive discussions with participants. Africa’s top ten billionaires and their stories on how they acquired wealth were creative and forward thinking was discussed. A case study of Nelson Mandela as a forward thinker leader was also presented for analysis and discussion.

The conference was very lively, interactive, engaging, impactful and timely as participants demonstrated through questions and answers about what it means to them to become and develop forward thinking leadership traits and creativity globally and in the African continent.

Each conference participant who attended the morning and afternoon sessions was presented with a certificate of completion by Develop Africa Inc. Mr. Maada Massaquoi, Computer Instructor at Develop Africa/ FAWE lab in collaboration with Dr. Jasmine Renner presented the certificates of completion to each participant attendee.

Mr. Josie Kamara-Cole the President of the Excellent Student Network International was also presented with an Asus E netbook / laptop donated by Develop Africa for his tireless efforts, perseverance and organizational abilities.

The conference ended on a high note with participants all impacted and motivated to impact their nation and generation through small incremental but gradual progression into solutions using forward thinking and creative leadership mindsets.

Thank you, sponsors, partners and donors for your selfless investment in developing human capacity. Together, we are sowing seeds and positioning the youths / young adults of Africa to make history in their generation.

<img src='https://dpqe0zkrjo0ak.cloudfront.net/pfil/2291/IMG_3426_Small.JPG' alt='Dr Jasmine Renner, Conference Speaker &
Stimulating Learning and Excellence Through Competition

<img src='https://dpqe0zkrjo0ak.cloudfront.net/pfil/2291/FIRST_SECOND_AND_THIRDLR_PRIMARY_SCH_Small.JPG' alt='First, second and third - Primary school'style='margin: 5px;'/>

First, second and third - Primary school

Warm greetings-

Do you remember taking part in any competitions when growing up? I loved to take part in competitions and I clearly remember a music quiz competition in high school. The competition encouraged me to learn a lot about music history, notes, playing instruments etc. - and to this day I still remember most of what I learned when studying for the competition as a book-worm 12 year old. It helped develop my studying abilities and the leader in me. Clearly competitions are a great way to encourage children to learn, focus and excel.

Well, on a regular basis we organize and hold competitions on various areas such as general knowledge quizzes, drawing etc. It’s my pleasure to share with you a video clips and photos from a quiz that your donations supported. Here's a brief report on the competition from Joshua, the Director of Door of Hope:

"The spelling and quiz contest took place at the Door of Hope hillside community of Upper Beccle's Street and Mellon Street in The Wellington municipality. There were as many as 210 children and 30 parents present to grace the occasion. The program was title "The Making Of Me" spelling and quiz contest for primary and junior secondary school pupils age ranges from seven(7) years to (14) years. The program was conducted to help and motivate the children to become passionate about their school work as this will help them achieve their dream in life. We want children in our community to pursue excellence not only in their school work but also in every other area of discipline they may find themselves

There were two categories of participants - 6 in the primary school category and 4 in the secondary school category. Prize monies were given to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd in both categories. The competition included questions on uniqueness of plants and animals. For example, the world's fastest animal runner is the Cheetah; the name of the largest crab is the Japanese spider crab."

Budding Leader - Watch Video and See How We are Connected

Warm Greetings-

Have you ever desired to get to know more about the children that we are supporting in Africa? Well, you are certainly not alone. As a Project Leader, I love to see the photos of the children and in particular to listen to videos of the children. This helps me to better understand their needs, desires, aspirations and to stay connected.

Here's a link to video of a girl called Richlyn. Richlyn is interviewed in this camera by the Director of Door of Hope (off camera) who asks her a number of questions. Richlyn is 10 years old and tells us what her favorite games are - and the school she attends - the Annie Walsh Memorial School (one of the top schools in Sierra Leone). Richlyn has a beautiful smile and dreams of becoming a doctor.

Towards the end of the interview she answers 2 questions that tugged my heart :

Q: What is the number one thing you would like to see changed in this world?
Richlyn: I will like to see poverty changed in this world

Q: Do you think that women should be given the opportunity to take part in decision making?
Richlyn: Yes!

I connected with her - right here. Real and warm! Richlyn and I - we together share a common dream. Similar thinking. I would imagine for many of you that support this project - you are saying as you read this: "Me too!"

At this early age, she is clearly conscious about these two crucial issues that are on our minds and the minds of leaders everywhere. Richlyn is a budding leader and we are so very thankful for the opportunity and privilege we together share - that of helping to educate the next generation of leaders. With this united consciousness and our on-going action, we know for a certainty that these issues will become history and a thing of the past in the coming years. Thanks for helping make this happen.

We have a question for You: Do you have any questions you would like to hear answered by the children in Africa that we work with? Feel free to let us know. In the coming months we will put together a video with your responses and share it here. You can submit your question through the contact us form on our website.

Go ahead - watch the video again.

Thanks for staying connected and warm!

With every good wish...

Poor, barely literate 18 year olds in a rural area cannot compete for jobs. Neither can they take advantage of the investments being made on the continent.

It seems the critical investment of this century will be how Africa’s children are equipped to prepare for the challenges and chances ahead. There is no time to waste."

We are definitely on the right track - investing into the future of Africa's children. Our continual investment is truly raising the future leaders of Sierra Leone. Thank you so much fro your on-going support!

Links:

Africa’s crucial investment – education

Two of the students (Thomasia and Timothy) have graduated from primary to secondary school. The parents and students are very grateful to GlobalGiving for sponsoring their children’s education.

Below is a testimonial from Isata, one of the beneficiaries. Your donations are paying for her school fees, and helping to provide books and school supplies.

“I am very grateful to GlobalGiving and Develop Africa for giving the opportunity to go to school. My mother is a poor single parent, hawking / retailing charcoal for our survival. She could not afford to send me to school. I was out of school, helping her sell charcoal until I met the representative of Develop Africa, who helped enrolled me into school, through the sponsorship of GlobalGiving. I promise to work hard and excel in school so that I in turn will be able to help less fortunate children like me. GlobalGiving donors, thank you very much. You have given me hope and a future.”

The photos show some of the children who have benefited from your support and donations. You will notice that they are proudly holding GlobalGiving signs / stickers. In the coming year, we hope to expand the sponsorship scheme to other deprived communities, where there are equally desperate needs for support. We hope to add at least 10 new beneficiaries to the scheme - bringing hope to many more.

With this in mind, we welcome your donations between now and the end of the year that would enable us to continue to impact many more lives like Isata's. Thanks for your support and for making a donation today!

We would also be happy to hear from you - so feel free to send us any comments and suggestions you may have on how we can do even more. We would be so happy to hear from you.

Best wishes

<img src='https://dpqe0zkrjo0ak.cloudfront.net/pfil/2291/next_generation_of_leaders_Small.JPG' alt='The next generation of leaders'style='margin: 5px;'/>

The next generation of leaders

<img src='https://dpqe0zkrjo0ak.cloudfront.net/pfil/2291/scholarshipbeneficiary_Small.jpg' alt='Star beneficiary'style='margin: 5px;'/>

Star beneficiary

<img src='https://dpqe0zkrjo0ak.cloudfront.net/pfil/2291/scholarshipbeneficiary2_Small.JPG' alt='scholarship beneficiary'style='margin: 5px;'/>

scholarship beneficiary

Project Visit From GlobalGiving and Gearing Up For The New Academic Year

<img src='https://dpqe0zkrjo0ak.cloudfront.net/pfil/2291/britt_and_scholarship_beneficiaries_Small.jpg' alt='Britt, Scholarship Beneficiaries, Janet and Joanne'style='margin: 5px;'/>

Britt, Scholarship Beneficiaries, Janet and Joanne

Warm greetings

We are extremely happy to bring you this project update. All of the children receiving scholarships did extremely well and were promoted to the next class. Their parents, happy with the academic progress, of their children, expressed their appreciation for your on-going support. It’s indeed a rewarding feeling to be a part of laying a great foundation for these children through education.

On May 5th, Develop Africa school supplies and scholarship beneficiaries had the unique opportunity to meet Britt Lake, the Program Operations Manager of GlobalGiving. Britt spent a day visiting Develop Africa's projects in Sierra Leone. A picture of Britt with a few of the beneficiaries is provided below.

Janet and the Sierra Leonean team were honored to host Britt. The visit involved a review and general monitoring of the different projects that Develop Africa has on GlobalGiving. We are happy to report that Britt was happy to see the progress being made and the work that we are doing with your support.

Education continues to be very much on the minds of people in Sierra Leone and the current education system is being reviewed. See below for a link to an article on this. We are praying that this change will help ensure that they receive an even better foundation.

Gearing up For the New Academic Year: In the coming months, we will awarding new scholarships and we would be so grateful for you on-going support, that is helping us impact the lives of these children. Please take a moment to make a donation today or send us feedback with your comments and suggestions on how we can improve etc. Be sure to also send an email to your friends and family asking them to support this worthy venture.

Thank you so much for your support!

Cordially and best wishes

It made my day!

<img src='https://dpqe0zkrjo0ak.cloudfront.net/pfil/2291/Scholarship_recipients_and_parents__450x235_Small.jpg' alt='Some of Scholarship Beneficiaries and Parents 2010'style='margin: 5px;'/>

Some of Scholarship Beneficiaries and Parents 2010

Warm greetings

Activity Update: So far this year we have together provided scholarships to an additional 10 students. See - photo of some of the children and their parents – taken at the award ceremony in Freetown. The new shipment of books and school supplies has arrived in Freetown. In the next update, we will provide additional information and share photos etc.

Please take a moment to watch the brief “thank you” video – linked below that made my day. With passion and fluency, in this special video message, Thomasia one of the scholarship beneficiaries extends thanks and gratitude on behalf of the other beneficiaries to you our GlobalGiving donors.

On one hand, it’s disheartening to be reminded (in this video) that even today, there are a lot of children out of school. Fortunately, on the other hand, it’s heart-warming to be reminded that together we are shaping the lives of these children and making a difference. As Thomasia states towards the end of the video – “Your sponsorship has made it possible for our parents to send and keep us in school. We are grateful for your support. We thank you GlobalGiving, Develop Africa and other donors for giving us hope and a future”.

These words from Thomasia made my day! The realization that my involvement is “giving hope” and “helping to provide a future” warmed by heart. Thomasia’s words will remain with me and continue to encourage me to do so much more.

I hope her words made your day brighter too. I hope your heart is warmed too as you listen to the video and read this update. It’s truly amazing how together we can help ensure that children are able to complete their education. I trust also that you would be inspired to do more – however you can. Remember every bit counts.

Without your support all this would not have been possible. Develop Africa is truly grateful for your past and on-going support. Thanks again for your support. Your feedback and suggestions on what we can do additional to expand our impact are so very welcome.

We wish to invite you to help spread the word about the joint impact we are making. Please invite / encourage your friends, family members, co-workers etc. to get involved. You can email this link to them or post this on Facebook etc. Together we can do even more and make this world a better place…

Cordially

Indelible Change

<img src='https://dpqe0zkrjo0ak.cloudfront.net/pfil/2291/evelop_Africa_Scholarship_Award171009_061_Small.jpg' alt='Scholarship Recipients and Family Members'style='margin: 5px;'/>

Scholarship Recipients and Family Members

Thanks to your on-going support, Develop Africa helped effect real change by providing 15 scholarships to children in Sierra Leone. The scholarships were provided at a scholarship award ceremony which took place on October, in Freetown. The occasion was graced by the parents, friends, teachers and staff of the school and the recipients of the scholarship award. The students and parents were delighted to receive the financial assistance that is making education a possibility for them. Together we are influential and effecting real change, one child at a time.

Marie Mansaray, one of the beneficiaries, gave a vote of thanks and asked local Develop Africa representatives to convey their heart-felt gratitude to GlobalGiving and other donors. Thank you Globalgiving partners, friends and family for helping further their education. We are together truly making a mark that cannot be erased. Additional information and a link to photos taken at the award ceremony are available here - http://bit.ly/phs2009 .

Over the course of the year through your giving Develop Africa has also been able to provide over 8 drums / barrels books and school supplies to the El Shaddai Children’s Home (in partnership with Lead Global, Inc.) and the Freetown Cheshire Home (in partnership with Nuwach Ministries).

As the year draws to a close, we would like to make a special appeal for your support … and send you a friendly reminder to add us to your “gift list”. Please consider making a donation before the end of the year and help us impact many more lives. We would so very much appreciate your support now and on a regular basis next year. We would also be so grateful to hear from you and welcome your feedback.

Site Visit Report

<img src='https://dpqe0zkrjo0ak.cloudfront.net/pfil/2291/Just_visiting_with_the_school_children..._Small.JPG' alt='Visiting with the school children...'style='margin: 5px;'/>

Visiting with the school children...

In April - May, this year, I had the opportunity to visit some of the partner schools in Sierra Leone. While there, I presented 3 new XO laptops to the Eva Houston School.
I was very warmly received at each school. I had a brief meeting with the school Principals / Head Teachers and was given a tour of each school. The children, teachers and Principals expressed their deep gratitude for the assistance that you have helped provide.
They asked me to convey their appreciation to you – our donors - for the materials received and scholarships provided. As they explained some of these materials are hard to come by and unavailable locally. By providing these supplies free to the schools and students, we are together promoting and supporting education. Through the scholarships and this supportive environment, the children are able to continue their education and their learning is enhanced.
Thanks donors for your on-going support! We all realize the value of a quality education – and even much more so in these days. This means a lot more than you will ever realize. This is helping to greatly increase their opportunities for success and independence.

Additional details about, pictures and a full report on my field trip are available from the link below.
We would appreciate your feedback and hearing from you. Please feel free to contact us at any time.

Your continued support is also appreciated. Please consider making an additional donation today or signing up for a recurring donation. This would help us impact many more lives. Thank you.

A video to warm your heart - jolly good fellows

In most places in the Western world, it’s cold or cooler now. How about a heart-warming moment for a change?

Well, here is an unedited, 8 minute video from Freetown, Sierra Leone that shows a group of very grateful children and teachers. This video was shot late in December 2008 – just before Christmas. You can see in the video the books and teaching supplies that your donations are helping to provide. Clearly the books and supplies received meant a lot to them.

Be sure to listen to the end of the video where you can hear the song in your honor. In this song YOU are proclaimed and acknowledged as “jolly good fellows”.

Thank you for helping to make a difference in their education through your donation.

We welcome your additional donations today and throughout the year – that will help us continue to do so much more.

87 special and unique reasons to be thankful and counting…

Hello friends,

As of Saturday December 6, we have together raised $3145 from 87 special donors – you being one of them. We appreciate each of you - for investing into the future leaders of Sierra Leone and also for helping Develop Africa secure a permanent presence on GlobalGiving. We did it together! Kudos to you all!

Some of you have already received a link to a recent Sierra Leonean newspaper article about our education initiatives in Sierra Leone. The link below – “Develop Africa Boosts Education” – shows how together we are making a difference.

The $3145 that we raised so far is a great start towards the project funding goal of $49,987. This amount will help provide much needed scholarships, books and school supplies for about 20 children. With your help we can do much more and reach our funding goal. So, as we close out the final month of this year and plan towards the upcoming year, can I ask that you help us take this project to the next level? Below under ‘Attachments”, is a link to a PDF file that provides some suggestions on how you can help us take this project to “The Next Level”.

Every action you take, every invitation you extend, every donation you make - all together counts and will help educate the next generation. You are powerful!

Making a Difference - Thank You Letter From The Field

Dear friends,

Thanks to all of you that already donated to the GlobalGiving Challenge 2008! We appreciate you.

Below is a link to a “thank you” letter (in PDF format) I just received from Freetown, Sierra Leone - In this letter, the Headmistress / Principal of the school expresses gratitude for the supplies you and other previous donors have helped to provide. Thanks for joining us in continuing to make a difference – and helping to educate the next generation of leaders in Sierra Leone.

As of Sunday, November 16, the project has received a total of $1,240 from 32 donations. With this money we will be able to provide additional scholarships, children’s books and much-needed school supplies. This is a great start!

We however still have 43 unique donors to go in 5 days time. This is “doable”. I’m sure with your help we can reach this goal.

Please let your friends and loved ones know about the challenge and encourage them to give too. If you could personally reach one or convince one person, we will definitely get there. You are welcome of course to make an additional donation.

Cordially
