Girls Develop Leadership Skills in St. John

The girls participating in Sisterhood Agenda's Sisterhood Mentoring Program are no longer locally funded. However, they continue to meet with Sisterhood Agenda President, Angela D. Coleman, who is developing leadership within the group to help them become more self-sufficient and self-governing. The group meets at the Youth Center in Cruz Bay, St. John.

Some of the development includes life skills, responsibility, peer mentoring, and sisterhood. They are also learning how to raise funds by offering products and services to the public such as bake sales and car washes. Group members are also hopeful about doing cultural exchanges and visiting colleges in the United States.

Sisterhood Agenda programs in St. John went extremely well for 2012! In fact, the girls want more time to meet regularly and also want to participate in artistic expression activities.

St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands is a small island with approximately 5,000 residents. Because the Sisterhood Mentoring Program and Girl Band members are not large groups and Girl Band members also need sisterhood mentoring activities, Sisterhood Agenda plans to combine them to maximize effectiveness and interest.

Future program sessions will consist of 3-hour sessions; 1.5 hours of sisterhood mentoring, followed by 1.5 hours of performance training and practice. Currently, Sisterhood Agenda is in the process of securing meeting space and funds for books, planned activities and field trips.

Sisterhood Agenda will host the New Year's Eve Youth Extravaganza on December 31, 2012, a unique dance party to open the new year in a safe and fun way while also registering youth for programs in 2013.

Sisterhood Field Trip June 2012

Sisterhood Agenda would like to thank everyone who supported Sisterhood Agenda’s Sisterhood Mentoring
Program at Julius E. Sprauve School. June 1-23, 2012,, the group had the opportunity to learn in a resort/retreat environment at the Westin Resort. The weekend at the Westin included program sessions such as sisterhood, healthy relationships, fitness, public presentation, and etiquette, lots of fun in the sun, swimming, plus a celebratory dinner at Cruz Bay Prime.

The final activity of the program: Sisterhood Agenda will go to the Myrah Keating Health Center for a clinic tour and discussion with Dr. Veronica Powell. Sisterhood Mentoring Program participants will receive their Certificates of Completion and Sisterhood Agenda t-shirts at the Julius E. Sprauve School closing ceremony for grades 6-8 on June 12, 2012.

“This is the beginning of a process that I hope the young ladies in the program take with them as they mature into adult women,” states Sisterhood Agenda President, Angela D. Coleman.

Sisterhood Mentoring St. John Tradewinds

Sisterhood Agenda would like to thank everyone who supported Sisterhood Agenda’s Sisterhood Mentoring Program at Julius E. Sprauve School.

This past weekend, the group had the opportunity to learn in a resort/retreat environment at the Westin Resort. The weekend at the Westin included program sessions such as sisterhood, healthy relationships, fitness, public presentation, and etiquette, lots of fun in the sun, swimming, plus a celebratory dinner at Cruz Bay Prime.

Sisterhood Mentoring Group February 2012

Sisterhood Agenda recently began its Sisterhood Mentoring Program at Julius E. Sprauve School in St. John. The program, led by Sisterhood Agenda’s President, Angela D. Coleman, meets every Wednesday until the end of
the school year. Ms. Coleman acts as a Big Sister to help ten female students go through their “journey toward
womanhood” together in the spirit of sisterhood.

Julius E. Sprauve School Principal Dionne Wells states, “The Sisterhood Mentoring Program is a good opportunity for girls to spend time with someone who has a positive influence on them with discussions and activities. We need a lot more of that.”

Assistant Principal Brenda Dalmida believes, “Our young ladies can bond in less competitive ways, learn strategies for working together, and appreciate the importance of sisterhood. It will help them see strengths in each other and in themselves.”

The Sisterhood Mentoring Program promotes comprehensive self-development and educational success. With a written curriculum and student manuals, program activities include: sisterhood, self-esteem, diet and nutrition,
health and fitness, public presentation, etiquette, healthy relationships, and life skills.

Other local Sisterhood Agenda programs include: Girl Band, Sisterhood/Brotherhood New Year’s Eve Youth Extravaganza, and Sisterhood/Brotherhood Career & Life Skills Training Summer Program.

Volunteers from the community are invited to speak to
the group and present information.

We Are Ready to Start!

With local support and Global Giving donations, Sisterhood Agenda is recruiting to implement a sisterhood mentoring program for 12 girls at Julius E. Sprauve School in St. John starting February 2012.

This program effort is coordinated with school administrators and local agencies, such as the Virgin Islands Police Department.
