More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

Afghan boys today only know fighting because of the last quarter century of war in Afghanistan. Many young boys were soldiers or lived as refugees. Refugee boys worked long hours selling newspapers or candy in the streets in order to feed themselves and their families and could never go to school. Now they have returned to Afghanistan and are too old to join school. They are hopeless. Without direction for the future, they continue to fight and disrupt their families and communities.

Activities

120 boys will study in Educational Learning Centers supported by CHI/AIL in Kabul and Herat. These community-based centers will give boys the opportunity to study math, science, language, and earn grade certificates on a fast-track basis.

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

Boys will become literate, advance their education, and learn such skills as computers and English that will help them get jobs. Education for boys will improve Afghanistan’s economy and contribute to making the country more secure.

Project Message

My father died in the war. I am the oldest son so I had to work to feed my family. My friends laughed at me because I couldn’t write my name. Since I joined AIL’s school, I can read & write very well.
- Mohammad Akbar, 16-year-old student of CHI/AIL boys' class

Why our funding goal has increaed

By Sondra Johnson - A note of thanks..., January 29, 2010 03:23 PM

Dear donors to the ‘Help Afghan Boys Trade Guns for Books’:

We want to sincerely thank you for your many donations to this important project in Afghanistan. Our original goal was to reach $30,000.00, and we are nearly at that goal. However, due to the ongoing sensitive situation in Afghanistan, there is a still critical need to offer an option to boys and young men. Giving them the opportunity to become literate and get an education allows a choice that is different from the more extreme, violent options facing young males.

We have increased our funding goal to $40,000.00 to address this ongoing need. The Afghan Institute of Learning and Creating Hope International have used your donated funds to start and continue classes for boys and young men in several of our educational learning centers. Students are learning to read and have gone on to other subjects such as math, science, and computer technology. With this training, young men have the opportunity to find good jobs to support themselves and their families. In all our classes we also discuss human rights, democratic principles and peace. Your donations have, and will, continue to allow Afghan males a chance to improve and grow.

Thank you again for all your support.
