Mission

AED-SATELLIFE is a global leader in delivering life-saving medical and public health information to doctors, nurses, policymakers, and community health workers in the world’s poorest countries. Wherever AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis are commonplace, but critical tools such as medical journals and Internet access are unaffordable luxuries, AED-SATELLIFE provides access to up-to-date, reliable, and relevant health information, improving the healthcare of patients worldwide.

Programs

AED-SATELLIFE’s activities reach an estimated 130,000 healthcare workers in 159 countries by providing free electronic health publications with material selected to be relevant to healthcare providers in the developing world and by hosting expertly moderated discussion groups to foster global knowledge-sharing. We also build local capacity and establish sustainable networks of communication through our special health technology projects in Africa and Asia.

Personnel Overview

Berhane Gebru - Director of Programs
Berhane has been involved with SATELLIFE PDA projects in Uganda, Malawi, Nepal, Rwanda, Nigeria, and Ethiopia. As Project Manager of our Uganda Health Information Network, he has overseen the distribution of vital health information to healthcare providers treating 4 million patients. Previously, Berhane served as Deputy Director of the Relief Society of Tigray, a community-based NGO in Ethiopia.

Courtney Hawkes - Development Associate
Courtney has overseen SATELLIFE’s Handhelds for Africa campaign including the collection and acknowledgment of over 600 PDAs contributed by medical professionals around the world. Buoyed by the notes of encouragement she finds included with the donated devices, she hopes the project has increased awareness of the lack of reliable health information and the dearth of technology in much of Africa.
