More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

The Bon are a minority Tibetan ethnic group that fled to India when the Chinese invaded Tibet in 1959. They established a community in Dolanji, India on donated land. Today, 80 Bon families, 200-300 Indian families, and several hundred orphaned children live in Dolanji, India and rely on the clinic at the Yung Drung Bon Monastic Center for free health care. Survival is difficult in this remote area and these poor families have limited access to other health care facilities.

Activities

Essential oils have proven to be an effective complement to traditional Tibetan and western medical practices to successfully treat disease. Essential oils and bottles are needed to re-stock supplies. Seed funding is needed for an herb garden.

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

The oils will be used to treat diseases of people in Dolanji. Clinic staff hopes to begin growing herbs and explore making these oils on site and selling them for income to support the clinic and this Tibetan community in exile.

Project Message

This project makes sure that the clinic will get the maximum medicinal use out of these donated oils, meeting the health needs of hundreds of children, men, and women.

Essential Oils, an Expanding Method of Treatment

By Toc Dunlap - Executive Director, December 06, 2011 08:57 PM

In November, I traveled to Dholanji, India to visit Menri Monastery and the monk, who is the essential oil healer for the monastery and the Tibetan community around the monastery. I delivered the oils provided by all of your donations-- thymus thujanol, cinnamomum cassia (bark), ledum groenlandicum, cinnamomum verum (leaf), and two oil mixtures from Young Living Essential Oils that are widely used.

Yungdrung Tenzin, the self-taught essential oils healer, has now trained another monk, during 20 sessions, to begin using essential oils.  Both Yungdrung Tenzin and the other monk are now treating patients using the oils sent from donors to Global Giving as well as other donors from around the world. Yungdrung Tenzin reports that the young monk apprentice is very creative, practices on himself when he is unsure of a treatment, and then checks in with Yungdrong Tenzin.

Yungdrung Tenzin, himself, has now expanded the treatments that he offers the monks to include homeopathy, massage and allopathic medicine (first aid for cuts, bruises, headaches, and other minor ailments).

Yungdrung Tenzin and his apprentice are very grateful for the essential oils that were brought through your donations.
