An Update from PPI

By PlayPumps International - Staff, November 02, 2009 02:11 PM

Thank you so much for helping to bring water to children in Africa. I’m pleased to share with you some exciting new developments relating to this project.

Thanks to your support, PlayPumps are currently bringing play opportunities and improved access to safe water to hundreds of communities and schools. In the three years since we started this project, our efforts have helped increase awareness of water poverty in Africa and have helped spark a number of new play-related water technologies. Over the last two years, we have installed more than 30 PlayPump systems in the Maputo and Gaza Provinces in Mozambique, serving dozens of communities and schools. At the same time, we have learned that PlayPumps, like other water solutions, are best offered as part of a broad portfolio of technologies – with significant community choice and support, and sustainable service delivery. We have also learned that delivering safe water is humbling work, and that ongoing operations and maintenance is a challenge for most players involved in the delivery of solutions. We are continuing to innovate to find models that can ensure sustainability. As part of those efforts, PlayPumps International has recently teamed up with Water For People, an organization that has the ability to include PlayPumps in a portfolio of water solutions it provides. Water For People, will now be responsible for implementing the pumps you have helped us fund. As part of our agreement with Water For People, we will be moving out of Mozambique, focusing our efforts going forward on Malawi. Because we are switching the focus of this project, some of the funds you have contributed may instead be used in Malawi, where Water for People will begin to implement PlayPumps as part of a broader portfolio of solutions.

This new arrangement offers an exciting opportunity to apply the lessons we have learned, maximize the benefits of our inventory of PlayPumps, and promote innovative solutions to ensuring sustainable supplies of water in rural Africa.

Thank you for sharing our passion for addressing global water poverty and for your support. If you would like to learn more, please read the statement from the CEO of PlayPumps International.
