More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

Like most low income communities in Rio de Janeiro, Julio Otoni is heavily exposed to criminal gangs, drugs and guns. Due in part to the lack of alternatives in the community,it is not at all unusual for children as young as 12 to become involved with gang culture. The project engages these young people in activities such as Computing, English, Capoeira, Dance and Arts. The project is always in need to have funding to sponsor a child. Please sponsor a child monthly.

Activities

CEMINA has built a Center at the Julio Otoni community which has become a focal point of the community, it is equipped with computers and broadband access and offers a program of activities including Educational Support, IT, Capoeira, Dance and Arts.

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

Allows 50 young people to receive education and participate in activities they would otherwise not have access to, providing them with a basis to develop their self-esteem and skills for the future and prevent their involvement with Drug Trafficking

Project Message

By being part of the project I got to be in a beach for the first time in my life. Even though Rio is a city by the sea I had never touched salt water in my life and I am 11 years old.
- Marcela Pinheiro, A beneficiary--one of the children of the project

Summer an opportunity for mobilizing new resources

The summer is an opportunity to join hands with the community of the favela, the neighbors of the street and  some volunteers for new activities. This year the season has started with the preparation for the Christmas party, which also means the conclusion the year. For some the older ones this means that they will engage in other activities.  This year the preparation for the Christmas party was quite especial. Children planned the party, prepared many of the presents that were offered to the parents, to the tutors and to their friends. Photos show how happy they felt at the occasion. 2011 was an year of good results for the project. Among other things there was the Vagalumes exhibition that was the result of a three month course on photography and video.

In 2012, there are new plans for increasing activities that bring the children outside the favela, so they can appreciate what the wonderful city of Rio offers in terms of museums, music and other activities free of charge.
