Safe Drinking Water for 80,000 Children in Bolivia Photo Gallery

Safe Water at school

A girl is showing a bottle with safe drinking water. Her family treats the water in small bottles at home, which are easy to carry to school. In this way, safe water is always at hand, even on the way to school - which often is a long walking distance.

Making safe drinking water at schools

Common plastic (PET) bottles are exposed to sunlight. The strong radiation helps to disinfect the water quickly, which then is consumed at school. The method is simple and scientifically proven. Children appreciate the natural taste of the water and actively participate in the treatment process.

Parade on International Hand Washing Day

Project schools participated in public events on October 15 to celebrate the International Hand Washing Day. School kids and teachers proudly displayed posters, street theaters and participated in poetry contests.

Mobile hand washing unit

The mobile hand washing units were a big success with the local population. They are easy to build, making use of old PET bottles which can not be used any longer for SODIS.

SODIS instructions

Solar Water Disinfection (SODIS) is being taught at schools - it is so simple that even a first grader can do it. This helps the children to obtain safe drinking water and protect their health.

Carrying water to school

A girl is carrying a bottle with home made drinking water. The project promotes SODIS, a simple method for obtaining safe drinking water.

Theatre

At schools the dangers of drinking untreated drinking water are being demonstrated by street theaters. Bacteria, viruses and parasites causing diarrhoea are a real threat to survival of children in Bolivia.

Healthy corner in class room

At the healthy corner, safe drinking water is being stored, and utensils for hand washing are available. Key messages are posted on the wall.

Safe Drinking Water makes for healthy children

The "healthy corners" installed by our project are spaces with safe drinking water.

Hand washing saves lives

Hand washing is one of the two key components of our projects - it effectively prevents diseases like diarrhea and pneumonia at a very low cost.
