Eliminating Deadly Open Fires in Latin America
More Information About this ProjectProject Needs and BeneficiariesHELPS’ concern about Accute Respiratory Illnesses, burns and deadly gases led to developing the ONIL Stove. Compared to open fires, it uses only 30% of wood and is safe to touch: the smoke is vented, eliminating gases. This stove eliminates the risk of burns and improves overall health. Guatemala is estimated to need one million stoves, an amount that will double in twenty years. All stoves are manufactured in country, creating employment for workers, suppliers, technicians, and installers. ActivitiesHELPS installs stoves through volunteers and trains villagers with a technician’s help; villagers in turn train their neighbors. Each village will have at least three follow-up visits from a technician to ensure that the stoves are properly used. ResourcesWhy this Project is ImportantPotential Long Term ImpactBy installing 1.3 million ONIL Stoves in Guatemala, we will be able to eliminate toxic smoke, burns and respiratory problems and reduce wood use up to 70%, benefitting the health and safety of most rural Guatemalan families.
