Protecting endangered whalesharks in Mexico
More Information About this ProjectProject Needs and BeneficiariesThe project will help to conserve the whale shark, reduce over-fishing and address unemployment amongst fishermen in already poor communities. Whale shark viewing has become increasingly popular among tourists and the project aims to teach responsible guiding in an area with one of the biggest populations of whale sharks. ActivitiesA five-day intensive training course will educate up to 20 ex-fishermen and unqualified current whale shark guides. The course will enable participants to train other potential guides with a 'train the trainer' approach, thus widening the impact.
