More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

The Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital was founded over 30 years ago specifically for women with childbirth injuries. The hospital staff perform life-changing operations and provide both physiotherapy and counselling to women who've been unfortunate enough to suffer from fistula. Complications during pregnancy and childbirth are widespread in Ethiopia and the need for midwives has never been greater.

Activities

With financial assistance from Ethiopiaid, the Fistula Hospital has recently constructed a midwifery college. The School of Midwifery needs an accomodation block to house its students while they complete their studies.

Funding Information

This project has been retired and is no longer accepting donations.

Additional Documentation

This project has provided additional documentation in a Microsoft Word file (projdoc.doc).

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

The School of Midwifery will train groups of 12 student nurses to become midwives. The midwives will not only care for patients, but educate Ethiopians about harmful traditional practices and the importance of proper medical care during childbirth.

Project Message

A Fistula can be easily prevented or repaired through modern surgery. Supporting Ethiopiaid could help save a life or rescue somebody from a lifetime of suffering. Please help us to make a difference.
- Professor Alec Reed, CBE, Founder and Voluntary Chair of Trustees

Latest Update from the Field

Student Midwife Accomodation

By Nichola Connal - Ethiopiaid Manager, July 07, 2010 12:18 PM

Building projects continue to expand both accommodation and classrooms for the midwifery college. Your donations are still urgently needed as more midwives need to be trained to work in Addis Ababa and the surrounding countryside to help continue to reduce the occurrence of fistula.
