Mission
ICE's vision is one of a "sovereign Kenya where communities continuously empower themselves to harness local knowledge for local development, and promote indigenous knowledge for healthy ecosystems". Its mission is "to work for the revival and promotion of indigenous knowledge for environmental rehabilitation and conservation, and to enhance local communities’ resource-based livelihoods and sustainable development through local knowledge".
Programs
Reviving traditional governance structures relevant for the stability of local communities and environmental conservation; Food and seed security which targets traditional roles and knowledge of men and women as providers of family wellbeing; Biodiversity and water - addressing disappearing biodiversity and reducing river water volumes, and promoting protection and recuperation of local forests; Developing community-based ecological learning centres
Personnel Overview
Gathuru Mburu - Director
Mburu holds a Masters degree in Environmental Planning and Management. He has been working in the environmental movement for the last ten years, in different organizations, and has valuable experience in working with local communities, especially revitalizing indigenous knowledge and its application in solving current ecological problems
Martin M. Muriuki - Programme Manager
Martin holds a BSc in Natural Resource Management. He has been working in the environmental movement for the last five years. He has valuable experience in community and stakeholder mobilization. Trained as a forester, he also has broad knowledge of forest protection and regeneration
Beatrice Wambui - Accountant
Beatrice has worked as an accountant for the past 10 years in various organizations and in various capacities. She has immense experience in accounts and has worked as Finance and Administration Coordinator for one of the leading charitable organizations in Kenya. She has volunteered to assist many community-based organizations to keep proper book-keeping to ensure accountability
