More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

About 50% of children in government schools across the country, do not know basic reading, writing and arithmetic even after 4 years of schooling. Read India, currently active in 21 Indian states, is aimed at achieving reading and arithmetic proficiency for all children in the country within and outside the school system. This learning campaign will be executed with the help of school teachers, Pratham trained volunteers, and the government school system in every state.

Activities

The campaign proposes to introduce daily period for reading and arithmetic in school by teachers, volunteers will train mothers to be involved with their child's education. States will have a Core Group at state capital & volunteers at village level.

Read India, Pratham's catalytic volunteer based programme, largely implemented in rural India has been evolving since its inception in 2006. Since Oct 08, Read India has reached out to 17,109,257 children in 18 states. The children in many states have graduated from Reading to Learn (classes for basic reading and math skills) to a higher level called Learning to Read. Cosequently, seeing the success, states without Government pratnerships are fast moving towards one. The campaign has not only been periodically monitored internally, by Pratham, but also externally by donors, the government and other institutions.
