More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

In Tanzania, more than half the population lives below the poverty line. Although health care is free to people aged over 60, many older people in rural areas cannot prove they are older than 60 because they lack identity cards. This means they are refused treatment in health clinics and hospitals. Most older people cannot afford to send their grandchildren to school. Although education is free, families do have to pay for school materials and uniforms.

Activities

Our local partners will work with the local District Council's Medical Officer to prepare and supply identity cards to 4,800 eligible older people. Uniforms, text books, shoes and exercise books will be provided to 130 primary school age children.

Latest Update from the Field

Update June 2010

By Rachel Thompson - Project Manager, June 18, 2010 12:03 PM

In Tanzania you need an identity card to access free health services. To help poorer older people and their families, Age UK is working to make sure that all older people have these cards.

The identity cards have made a big difference to the lives of older people. Once they have their new cards, older people no longer hesitate before seeking health care. Before they would use the money for family expenses, such as the education of their grandchildren, putting their own health at risk. Not anymore.

These cards also increase the self esteem of older people, who feel more recognized and respected since they have regained some of their basic rights.

As in other African countries Tanzania has many grandparents caring for orphaned grandchildren. Over the past six months, Age UK has funded workshops in 27 villages to create awareness of the issues older people face in caring for young children.

Caring for young children when you are older can be quite a challenge. Some of the difficulties are on a practical level: such as how to collect enough firewood and water for everyone. By holding workshops which involve all villagers other people learn ways they can help families headed by grandparents.

Young children also have to be educated. Though primary school education is free in Tanzania many grandparents have to find funds to buy uniforms and equipment. Age UK helps these families by providing children with school uniforms, school bags, shoes, mathematical sets and ball pens.

Grandfather Alfred says”, We are happy to see our grandchildren going to school and not missing classes because of lack of school uniforms and materials. Your support has made a lot of improvements in our grandchildren’s school performance and reducing drop out rate.”

Alfred adds, “Dear friends, we really appreciate your continued cooperation and support. “ Please give generously to support this project.
