Creating playroom for disabled children in Yelatma Photo Gallery

The day room
The day room has some paintings and soft play blocks (more for the children to sit on than play with). The girl in the wheelchair is a bright little girl who is desperate to talk to people but because no-one responds she talks to herself. She loves cuddles, teddies and drawing. She can push herself in her wheelchair but rarely gets the chance as there is nowhere to go.

Children sleeping on mats
The boy in red has curled up under the radiator to keep warm. He had been given sedation earlier that morning as he can be violent due to lack of stimulation and distraction activities.

Jo taking video footage
As soon as someone enters the room many of the children rush up, desperately seeking touch and affection. One girl hugged Jo’s waist and didn't let go the whole hour she was in there, she is another bright little girl desperate to talk. The boy was very interested in the camera and found it fascinating to watch himself on the video.

Children in day room
A typical day with children sitting on the floor on low chairs, staring into space or chewing their hands or clothes. If this was a video you would see the two standing boys, rocking, spinning and banging their heads on the wall and hear lots of screams, moans and general noises for stimulation.

Child restrained
A boy walking down the corridor with his hands tied behind his back. He actually receives portage daily, but now he is mobile the rest of the day is spent in the day room. He sometimes bangs his head or other people and so spends huge parts of the day with his hands tied behind his back.

Jumping Jack
The boy in red is in mid-jump. He is a very active and strong with a lot of energy, but no way of using it so he spend hours jumping up and down on the spot and trying to run in the small room, for which he gets shouted at due to the other children.
