Water pumps in the Sahara desert.
More Information About this ProjectProject Needs and BeneficiariesThe availability of water in Southern Mauritania is a growing problem due to declining rainfall, desertification and the absence of a water distribution network. Women and children spend more than two hours to fetch water. This takes time and energy away from efforts to pursue activities such as child care, attending school, and farming. The UN and the Ministry of Health reported in 2005 more than 120,000 cases of diarrhoea, 4,200 of cholera, and 17,000 of parasitic intestinal diseases. Activities-Provide water hand pumps (5 m3/h each) for up to 30,500 people. -Train 150 user leaders in hand pump operation and maintenance. -Organise awareness raising campaign to 1,500 community members in health, hygiene and sanitation Funding InformationThis project has been retired and is no longer accepting donations.
