Gilbert, Justin and the community tree nursery
Green Care Shisong's community nursery during the pilot project. It's partly shaded under existing trees to provide cover and protection from too much rain and sun.

The problem: deforestation
This area has been burned. Sometimes this is deliberate to clear land for temporary cultivation. In other cases trees are removed for firewood. The new plantations will aim to provide for these and other needs, but remain standing to reduce erosion and water polution.
|
A 'safe' water supply
Mature trees protect the village water supply from polution and silting. They can also be a good supply of food, building materials and support wildlife.

Volunteers working in the nursery
Local volunteers are joined by BTCV volunteers preparing pots for young seedlings.
|
Planting out
Community volunteers clear bracken and undergrowth before Green Care and village volunteers plant out the seedlings.
|
Seedling in place
Five months after collection as a seed, this young tree moves from the community nursery into the planting area.
|
A 'planting pair'
Planting days are big community events. Planters work in pairs, with many others carrying and distributing plants.
|
All part of the team
Community planting days are great! Everyone gets involved and there's a huge sense of fun.
