Island Hospice and Bereavement Service

Mission

Through training, networking, community partnering and direct service Island Hospice Service will provide: Palliative care and support, primarily at home and also in hospital and a comprehensive therapeutic service for the bereaved.

Programs

Island Hospice has worked with community partners in high-density areas of Harare to develop skills and knowledge in working with children needing palliative and/or bereavement care. Partners were formal and informal children’s homes/ community care groups. Partners requested help working with growing number of young people, looking after terminally ill parents, often HIV + themselves.

Val Maasdorp - Community Teams Manager
Val lives in Harare and is the Clinical Manager of Africa’s first Hospice of 1979, Island Hospice & Bereavement Service. She began work with Island more than 20 years ago and has facilitated the organisations weathering of huge challenges as a result of Independence, political turmoil, a world record inflation rate, collapsing health facilities and one of the highest HIV rates in the world.
