Betou with keepers Erick and Diane

Erick and Diane live locally to our sanctuary and play a huge part in caring for the chimps welfare.

Our resident electrician, Mardoché Missidi

Mardoché will never forget the day he was repairing one of the sanctuary’s vehicles and Talian, an exceptionally intelligent chimp, managed to escape from the enclosure without anyone seeing him. Talian gradually came up to the car and got inside, removing the keys from the ignition, got on top of the car and started to unscrew the roof rack!Mardoché spotted him and manged to encourage him to put the keys down. It took a while but eventually Talian gave them back and carried on his morning walk!

Luc B

Luc's mother was killed by a poacher in the Democratic Republic of Congo. He was taken to the city and sold to a restaurant owner. He was exhibited to the public for several years until he became too large and his owner became tired of him. One day after he was particularly naughty the restaurant owner decided to sell him to a trafficker, who put Luc on a boat to take him to to the other side of the River Congo. Luckily the trafficker was intercepted and Luc has been with us since Feb 2009.

Mboulou playing with baby chimp

This month peace reigns again in group two, of which Moboulou is a member. The three females Cherie, Maybo and Kiki, with their three babies Dipanda, Kidiba and Simmy respectively, have settled perfectly well into this group and everything seems to be going well. For Moboulou this has been a gift from heaven. He suddenly has three more females in his private harem, as well as three babies to play with all the time.

Kakua with his keeper Serge

Kauka is especially charismatic not only to the caregivers, but also to the other chimpanzees. From the very first moment he made a good impression on everybody. Except for a few moments in which the bigger chimps became a bit violent with him, Kauka kept the situation under control. When he saw a chimp chasing him tirelessly, he climbed on any of the caregivers looking for protection. Serge, one of his favorite caregivers, hugged him for a while until the other chimps left him alone.
