Climate change adaptation in the Himalayas
More Information About this ProjectProject Needs and BeneficiariesHimalayan forest canopies atop mountain ridges are vital for the stability of underlying terraced hill slope farmland. Increased population diminishes this resource for fuelwood and agriland. 90% of household fuel is wood burnt on open hearths causing respiratory problems and premature death. Charcoal briquettes made locally from farm waste & invasive plants, used in conjunction with chimney ventilated stoves, will benefit forest regeneration, new forms of horticulture and health. ActivitiesLocal community committees, supported by Eco Himal trained staff in an 18 month educational & capacity building programme, will ensure its success. Learnt skills will be transferred to other communities. Funding InformationThis project has been retired and is no longer accepting donations. Additional DocumentationThis project has provided additional documentation in a Microsoft Word file (projdoc.doc). ResourcesWhy this Project is ImportantPotential Long Term ImpactThis project affects 14000 people directly. But this is not a ‘one off’. Heavy emphasis is placed upon training and capacity building, so the Nepalese can replicate and introduce it to new areas, conserving the forest and improving health & welfare Project Message
