Rescue Girls from Bonded Servitude

Summary

In rural Nepal, an historic tradition, called Kamlari, permitted destitute families to sell their daughter's labor. Now, however, the Nepal government has banned the practice. Yet, many families still carry on the tradition, gaining little more than $50 a year for each daughter sold into bonded servitude. This program provides the family with a goat or pig as substitution for the daughter's wages, brings the girl home and ensures her access to education. progress reportread updates from the field

More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

In rural Nepal, impoverished families traditionally sold their daughters into bonded servitude every year to supplement the family's scant income. Without the $50-$70 they receive for their daughters' labor, some families couldn't afford the food to feed the remaining children at home. These girls are often taken far from their villages to work in distant cities. They are often forced to work long hours, are mistreated and sexually abused, and some disappear forever.

Activities

Teams of trained NYF staff, locate and rescue the girls in the indentured situations and bring them back to their families. To replace the income from the sale of their child, NYF gives each family a piglet or goat. And, NYF ensures the girls receive the opportunity for an education.

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

With the help of former Indentured Daughters, NYF has eliminated the bonding tradition from one of the five districts where it occurs. Now, they are working to end the practice in a second district. With these girls not only coming home but also getting education, their ability to contribute financially to the family's well-being is far beyond what it was as a bonded laborer. With the liberation of more than 11,400 girls to date, NYF is committed to completely ending this desperate practice.

Project Message

Father, I beg you. Let me go to school. Don't send us to work for the landlords. We are all equal. Though we are daughters we are your children. Send us to school. Make your children's future bright.
- Sumitra Chaudhari, a girl sold into servitude and rescued by NYF

Former Indentured Child Receives Back Pay

Phulbasni Chaudhary -- Freed and Paid

Many girls who have been sold into bonded servitude by their impoverished and desperate parents are "purchased" by well-to-do middle-class and upper-class Nepali families.  Yet, this does not guarantee that they will be treated any better than household slaves.  Despite promises of fair treatment and education, these children are usually worked without respite, day in and day out, while provided only the bare minimum of food and shelter.

However, with the help of the Nepal Youth Foundation's successful efforts to challenge this illegal practice, these "employers" are not only being forced to release these children, they are also being pressured to pay the wages for the work performed.

Often the threat of a lawsuit or a formal complaint with the local police are sufficient to compel the employers to comply with the law and release the girl from her obligation.  Now, too, through the dilligent efforts and persistent pressure from the Former Kamlari Development Forum (FKDF), an association of formerly indentured girls, these employers are agreeing to pay back wages, too.

One such case is that of Phulbasni Chaudhary whose employers agreed to deposit five years of back wages into a bank account for her education.  In addition, these people signed an agreement not to employ bonded children again.
