Help Saviour and her friends go to school Photo Gallery

Every day starts with sweeping out the yard.

Saviour always starts the day by doing her chores. Here she is sweeping the yard so the community can keep a look out for snake trails.

Then it's time to prepare breakfast

Just after the rainy season there is enough food for two meals a day. But come the end of the 7 month dry season things can get tough.

Fetching water is a daily ritual

Saviour and here cousin Valencia are only 10. Yet with no parents they have to fetch filthy water from the local stream each morning. The community wash in the stream, and animals drink from it too. But it's all they have.

Then the 7k walk to school begins

It's over 30 degrees and the children carry no water. It will take them two hours to get there.

The school is an old borrowed farmhouse.

As temporary shelters go this isn't a bad one. There are walls and roof. But learning is hard. There is no glass in the windows, the desks are broken and the roof leaks during the 5 month rainy season. But the biggest problem is that the owner wants the building back.

It's seriously dark in the classrooms

The building was designed as a farmhouse so the lack of light is a real problem. Doors are considered a luxury.

Saviour loves to learn

Despite the conditions Saviour and her friend's love to learn. Classes for grades 1 and 2 run for three hours each day.

Desks and chairs are badly needed

There aren't enough desks and chairs to go round. And almost everything has seen better days.

Many teachers give their time for free

In Zambia the government provides teachers for free if there is somewhere for them to live. At Simakakata there is only the a huge lack of accommodation and more is needed if the school is to attract the trained teachers the children need.

After class it's 7km back home

Saviour leaves school at 3pm. When she gets home she'll have time to eat and do a few chores. By 6pm the light will be fading rapidly and their will be no time for homework. Despite this Saviour loves school. Please help to fund the classrooms and teacher's houses needed so she can continue to learn.
