A happy farmer with a good harvest of rice
Rice was planted in Igbeagu-Izzi for long time because there are many swamps in the area. Now rice is becoming a basic food in Nigeria, therefore the local processing of raw rice is very important.

Preparation of the ricefield for planting
The soil of the swamp is tilled by the hoe. To retain the necessary water small dams surround the portions of the swamp.

The small rice plants from the nursery are planted in a certain distance to improve productivity.

The variety "Cisadane" is resistant to "Gall Midge
The variety "Cisadane" was introduced in the area of Igbeagu-Izzi by the Development Project IZZI and comes from the "International Institute of Tropical Agriculture" (IITA), Ibadan, Nigeria. This variety is resistent to "Gall Midge" a dangerrous pest which has destroyed for many years the rice.

Traditionally the raw rice is first cooked in big pots.

Dried rice is ready to mill
Ricefarmers prefer to mill their rice in ricemills in the surroundings. Therefore the Village Development Project IZZI wants to help the farmers milling the rice to better conditions.

Small quantities of rice serve for own consumption. A big part of the riceharvest is sold as "cash crop" in the local markets.
