Rice processing creates jobs for 10 people Nigeria Photo Gallery

A happy farmer with a good harvest of rice

Rice was planted in Igbeagu-Izzi for long time because there are many swamps in the area. Now rice is becoming a basic food in Nigeria, therefore the local processing of raw rice is very important.

Preparation of the ricefield for planting

The soil of the swamp is tilled by the hoe. To retain the necessary water small dams surround the portions of the swamp.

Traditional planting of rice

The small rice plants from the nursery are planted in a certain distance to improve productivity.

The variety "Cisadane" is resistant to "Gall Midge

The variety "Cisadane" was introduced in the area of Igbeagu-Izzi by the Development Project IZZI and comes from the "International Institute of Tropical Agriculture" (IITA), Ibadan, Nigeria. This variety is resistent to "Gall Midge" a dangerrous pest which has destroyed for many years the rice.

Tradional threshing of rice

The collected rice is threshed in the ricefield on large mats with long sticks.

The chaff has to be removed

The chaff is separated from the rice grains by wind.

First step of processing Parboiled Rice: Cooking

Traditionally the raw rice is first cooked in big pots.

Second step: Drying of the cooked rice in the sun.

The moist ricegrains have to be dried carefully to avoid cracking.

Dried rice is ready to mill

Ricefarmers prefer to mill their rice in ricemills in the surroundings. Therefore the Village Development Project IZZI wants to help the farmers milling the rice to better conditions.

Ricefarmers bring their rice to the ricemill

Small quantities of rice serve for own consumption. A big part of the riceharvest is sold as "cash crop" in the local markets.
