More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

We allow underprivileged children to experience their local environment. We inspire these children to protect their environment and inform them about eco tourism job opportunities. We develop the children’s self-confidence while diminishing the stigma of apartheid through working with international volunteers. We give a safe home to orphaned and injured wildlife. We urgently need a vehicle to safely and legally transport the children.

Activities

Weekly 8 kids are collected from their village and taken to the bush school where they stay for 5 days. Rescued animals, bush walks and lessons inspire students to care for their environment. Children are also taught about life skills and careers.

Potential Long Term Impact

Today’s local underprivileged children will be able to secure good employment in nature reserves. The children, future custodians of nature, will be inspired to protect wildlife and their fragile environment. Transporting them safely is essential.

The mini bus is doing a great job

Mondays: Picking up the children in the village

Dear Friends of Daktari,

We would like to thank you all for helping Daktari towards the purchase of the Toyota Quantum to safely transport the children.

Every Monday, the mini bus is driving to the village to collect 8 to 10 children coming to Daktari for a week of education. This is a trip the children will never forget, as it is, for most of the children, their first interaction with wildlife although they live only 50 kms away. During these two trips coming from their village to Daktari, and back a week later, they often have the opportunity to see cheetahs, lions and even elephants while driving between the two beautiful game reserves of Karongwe and Makalali. What a treat for the children!!!

It was very difficult to find the funds to purchase the vehicle but thanks to you, we’ve done it!!! We still have to refund the loan we had to take, and this is taken care of by our regular volunteers.

We trust you are pleased by your involvement with the education of the children and the protection of the environment and we are very honoured to have you with us on this matter.
