More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

Literacy for women in the Tibetan Autonomous Region was estimated to be 57% in 2000 (2007/2008 UNDP China Human Development Report). Most Tibetans in the Kanze area are farmers and nomads, living far from the town so many children need to board. The government gives some funding, but it is not even enough to pay for the food. There is nothing for bedding, clothing, books or medical care so that many children, particularly orphans and those with only one parent, simply can’t afford to attend.

Activities

ROKPA provides funding towards food, books & stationary, healthcare, bedding and school fees for these girls who are either orphans, from single parent or destitute families through their time at this primary school.

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

By providing these girls with an education, we are helping them escape from a cycle of poverty. It will bring about social change, as they in turn will be more likely to ensure that their children are educated and make it the cultural norm.

Project Message

My favourite food is rice. I like Tibetan (language) and English best. I like to dance and jump and play games. When I grow up I want to be a teacher.
- Tsering Yangzom, 10 year old student with only one parent

Latest Update from the Field

A report from ROKPA UK for Kanze Girls School

By Victoria Long - Coordinator for ROKPA in the UK, June 25, 2010 11:32 AM

Dear Friends

We are really pleased to be able to let you know that with all the funds raised by you, as well as funds raised through other branches of ROKPA in Europe, we have managed to reach the target amount of £9,449 needed for this project this year!! Thank you all so much for your contributions. We are so happy that we can be sure that all these 91 girls are secure in their education for another year.

Now we are placing a new project onto this site: Primary education for Tibetan orphans. ROKPA supports over 1000 orphans and children from destitute nomadic and farming families, through primary schools in Tibetan areas of China, different groups or sometimes whole classes in different schools. We have committed to funding these chldren for another year and we hope to be able to help them into the next stage of their education as well. Come and see this project on the Globalgiving site and help us keep these children in school. Their future is in our hands.

Best wishes,

Victoria Long
