More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

In the past 15 years, conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo has killed over 5 million people. The humanitarian crisis is especially severe in eastern Congo. Despite overwhelming odds, there is hope. Communities are working together to help those in need, create economic opportunity and advocate for peace. Leaders from around the world are working in partnership with the people of the DRC, and people from around the world are learning about and advocating for a new future for the region.

Activities

ECI works with and on behalf of the people of eastern Congo to raise public awareness, drive policy change and increase the quantity and quality of funding that supports local, community-based approaches to heal and sustain eastern Congo.

Eastern Congo Initiative Update May 2011

Thanks to your generous contributions, the Eastern Congo Initiative has raised nearly $15,000 on GlobalGiving.org in the last year. On our site, the funds raised by this project support six different organizations in the DRC: Association des Femmes des Media du Sud Kivu (AFEM), Children's Voice, Green House Bunia / PPAS-RDC, Laissez Afrique Vivre (LAV), Synergie des Femmes (SFVS), and Yole! Africa.

Although many individuals and communities have been helped by these organizations, I thought it would be nice to share a specific story from a beneficiary of one of them. Children's Voice's program in Goma serves 384 children by providing education and a generally safe and healthy environment. One child who has benefitted from their trainings and school materials stated,

"After my parents died in the war in 2004, I came in Goma and stayed in street. Now I am happy to be at school. I will learn to read and to write. I will send a letter to the president Obana, I keep what I will tell him. I was lost. I thank Children Voice and those who have a big heart for helping me to have a new life."
