Build an energy-saving school kitchen in Kenya
More Information About this ProjectProject Needs and BeneficiariesThe existing mud-brick kitchen at the school is unhygienic, hazardous and outdated. Meals are cooked upon a handful of inefficient and uneconomical open wood fires. By cooking in this way, each year the school alone consumes over 13,000kg of locally collected firewood - a practice which contributes heavily to local deforestation and environmental damage such as soil erosion. Furthermore, the bland maize-based lunches lack any nutrition and for many children is their only meal of the day. ActivitiesA modern kitchen with chimneys and plumbing will ensure a hygienic environment. The energy-efficient stoves will reduce the schools consumption of firewood by up to 75 per cent and the kitchen garden will allow the school to grow its own vegetables. Funding InformationThis project has been retired and is no longer accepting donations. Additional DocumentationThis project has provided additional documentation in a Microsoft Word file (projdoc.doc). ResourcesWhy this Project is ImportantPotential Long Term ImpactThe project will radically reduce the schools consumption of firewood and help to preserve local woodlands and forests. A productive kitchen garden will allow the school to supplement meals with nutritious vegetables to improve the health of pupils. Project Message
