Project Needs and Beneficiaries

**Please note that this project is now finished, and this listing will be retired shortly.** Many released prisoners in Kenya face rejection from family and are never accepted back into their communities, which means little chance of changing their lifestyles. Many continue in crime to survive, often returning to the prisons they recently left.

Activities

The half-way home welcomes prisoners who have nowhere to go on release from prison. It operates a six month aftercare programme of counselling, daily routines and vocational training.

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

Up to 20 people a year can benefit from the half way home: reintegrating into society, gaining jobs and reconnecting with their families. Breaking the cycle of re-offending means that ex-offenders will stop being a drain on society.

Project Message

I was released from prison in 2003. I suffered a lot of shock because I was not accepted by society. At Philemon I started learning how to gain the confidence and trust from society.
- Gabriel Muithi Munyao, Resident at the Half Way Home.

The End of An Era?... A Closing Report

By Andrew MacKay - Chair, Philemon UK, November 25, 2011 08:22 PM

It really is the end of an era at Philemon, but also an exciting time of transition. Philemon has closed Kenya's first ever Halfway Home for ex-prisoners, to focus on a number of new and exciting projects across Kenya.

Visit the website for a full update: www.philemon.org.

Thank you for all your generous support of this historic work.  Your donations have been vital to changing the lives of many ex-prisoners, drastically reducing the re-offending rates of ex-residents.

The Halfway Home has been praised by the Kenyan Vice-President and the UK Attorney General, by prison authorities and police, but most of all by the residents.

Here are a few of the comments they have received over the years:

"I am therefore not hesitant to say to donors of all kinds, whether individuals or organisations or governments that we need to be in full support of Philemon since many have immensely benefited from it." Gabriel Muithi Munyao

"I had no clothes, I was nobody but they invited me in.  Philemon has given me a firm foundation. I had no means to start life; Philemon helped me." Denis Lugard Mtei

"In Philemon I’ve learnt to forgive and coexist with others. In Philemon I’ve been loved, I’ve been blessed with good food and clothing." James Mwindi Ngoru

Kelvin Mwikya, recently nominated for the Guardian International Development Award 2011, is excited about the future, saying "this is a positive move which will make us improve on service delivery to our people."

Please do check the website and Global Giving for future Philemon projects.

Thank you all so very much.

The Philemon Team
