More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

In a context where 24 million girls can't afford to go to school, Camfed provides full scholarships for young women to stay in school- empowering them to be leaders of change in their communities. Included in this package, for girls who live a long way from the school, and whose safety and concentration in class are compromised by lengthy daily journeys, Camfed also provides safe housing. In order to support 30 girls through school, we're continuing the construction of a new hostel in Zimbabwe.

Activities

The Nyangani hostel will allow these young women to focus on their secondary education and their future. Your support will help supply the plumbing, plaster, flooring, electricity and labor for the final construction of this hostel.

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

Your support will not only transform the lives of these 30 girls, but by securing their education, you enable them in turn to become empowered leaders. Their education and motivation will inspire them to support other young women in their community.

Project Message

There is no better gift to the Zimbabwean child than to let him or her know that education is not up for grabs.

“Restful nights knowing girl students are safe and protected”

With help from GlobalGiving supporters, we are building the Nyangani hostel in Zimbabwe to house 30 girls, many who make long, unsafe walks to reach school every day. This hostel will provide them with a safe living environment and help them succeed in school.

Construction Progress Highlights

Construction of the hostel began in 2008 and was delayed due to hyperinflation and high material costs. As Zimbabwe has returned to a more stable economy, we have resumed our construction of this crucial hostel for girls in the community.

Students, parents, teachers and community members have worked together to collect and deliver construction materials like water, river sand and pit sand to the hostel site. The Nyangani Rural District Council has provided scaffolds free of charge for the past four months, a service they normally charge for, allowing the roof to be completed very quickly. Electrical wiring has also been installed and plastering on the walls has been finished. The community is very excited to see the hostel take shape with walls and a roof, major steps toward creating a safe and dry living environment for the girls.

Next Steps

The hostel still needs ceiling panelling, flooring, eight exterior doors, two interior doors, plumbing and painting. The school has dedicated the bulk of its building and repairs budget to this project, but they don’t have enough funds to complete the project. We hope, with your help, that this hostel will soon be completed and serve many needy girls. Mr. Rwambiwa, the project coordinator, says, “We cannot wait for the official opening of the hostel and for restful nights knowing girl students are safe and protected.”

Thank you for your support!
