More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

The coastal and mountain rainforests of Tanzania are under immense pressure: only 30 percent of the ancient trees are still standing largely due to clearing for farming and logging. This deforestation in turn fuels climate change, depletes drinking water supplies, and destroys critical habitat. These forests are home to 114 vertebrate species found nowhere else on Earth, as well as 1,500 unique plant species - many of them medicinal herbs. Over 1.5 million people call these mountains home.

Activities

This project supports grassroots conservation and development projects in 146 villages that are working to protect 250,000 acres of forest. Core project activities include: environmental education (currently in 200 schools), tree planting (10 million trees planted and counting), and the introduction of fuel-efficient cook stoves (which use 50% less fuel wood than traditional ones).

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

This project is contributing to the conservation and restoration of one of the oldest and most biodiverse forests in the world, allowing local people to live in harmony with their environment and preserve their natural heritage for many generations.

Project Message

If we lose our forests they will never return. By working hand in hand with local communities we have found a way to keep these forests standing and to enhance the lives of the local communities.
- Charles Meshack, Executive Director, TFCG

Latest Update from the Field

March Project Update

By Kate McLetchie - Executive Director, March 26, 2012 01:18 PM

A big thank you for believing in the import need to conserve Tanzania's forests. Whether you have donated $5 or $500 to this project please know that every dollar counts and is put right to work. We have been overwhelmed by the generous support this project has received in recent months and hope our partnership to conserve East Africa's forests continues well into the future. With just over $1,000 to raise towards our $20,000 goal, we are well on our way to making a lasting impact (and once this project is fulling funded we'll be back with even more opportunities to conserve Tanzania's forests!).

ARC's field partner, the Tanzania Forest Conservation Group (TFCG), publishes The Arc Journal and we invite you to check out the latest issue to better understand some of the current events surrounding Tanzania's forests - everything from forest justice to the government's role in conserving these forests. You can also read up on TFCG program highlights, including encouraging youth engagement in environmental issues, land use planning, and the REDD pilot project. Funds raised from this GlobalGiving project go to directly to the field to support these and other critical conservation projects.

If you live in or near NYC, we would love for you to join us at our 21st annual Artists for Africa benefit this April 11th where you can learn even more about our mission to support grassroots community development and conservation projects in Tanzania. More details about this special event for Tanzania, its people and its forests, can be found here

Asante Sana!
