More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

The creation of Amigos de Sian Ka’an set a precedent for being the first non-governmental, non-profit association formed in Quintana Roo. Spawning aggregations are specific locations in the Reef where fish meet at precise times to reproduce. Despite its high ecological importance little is known about these sites.

Activities

Since 2006 with the support of many organizations and local fishermen, ASK have been conducting research dependent on funding in the Quintana Roo coast. Through the monitoring program, we intend to influence environmental regulation in the area.

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

So far the project has been very successful with more than 60 km explored so far and ten sites validated. The project is training local fishermen to survey multi-species spawning aggregations and develop sustainable long term fishing policies.

Project Message

In more than 20 years the research conducted by ASK has been translated in more than 1,000,000 hectares of forest, wetlands and coral reef protected. GVI is very proud to work with ASK.

Latest Update from the Field

Amazing support for the GVI Charitable Trust

By Ross Deans - GVI Charitable Trust Manager, January 30, 2012 12:13 PM

We would like to share the most recent trustee report from the GVI Charitable Trust. This report covers the six month period from July to December 2011.

We are delighted to share that this has been by far our most successful period, raising in six months nearly as much as we did the whole of the previous year. This increase in funding has brought a corresponding increase in the impact we have been able to create on our programs around the world.

During this period we have invested in sustainable education across Latin America including support for the elderly in Guatemala and income generation schemes to support education in Honduras and Ecuador. In Mexico we have worked with a community to establish a recycling centre and in Kenya our partners in Mombasa will now realise their goal of seeing impoverished students through to completion of the primary education earning recognised qualifications for the first time.

These are just a few highlights of an amazing, productive and rewarding six months. Thank you to everyone who has supported us and played a crucial role in these achievements.
