This project is working with five communities in Budaka District, Eastern Uganda to improve their health and environment by providing better quality pit latrines for 200 families (2,000 people)
The target communities identified poor quality and quantity of water and inadequate sanitation as the major problems they currently face. An ongoing project is addressing the issue of water provision, and this component is addressing the issue of poor sanitation. Currently latrines are either non-existent or in a poor state of repair, resulting in unhygienic practices, unhealthy environment, unnecessary spread of disease and, ultimately poor health amongst the community.
Using local materials and local artisans, the project is constructing pit latrines in the community and working with families to make sure that the latrines are used properly and maintained.
These pit latrines will improve the sanitation, reduce the level of disease and improve the environment for the whole community. These latrines will serve to encourage other communities to copy them, given that local materials and skills are utilized
