More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

People in rural communities throughout Nepal struggle with reproductive health problems, HIV/AIDS and child trafficking because information about these issues is unavailable. Much of the country’s population is not only illiterate but remote, and is therefore impeded in accessing information. Our radio broadcasts – through satellite radios and community partner AM/FM stations – currently reach 9 million rural Nepalese with vital education about these challenges.

Activities

Expanding our radio audience to 10 additional rural communities that lack AM/FM reception, providing them with satellite radio receivers, as well as ongoing training and support of local peer educators for discussion groups about the radio programs.

Latest Update from the Field

Nepali Program Update

By Alex Bernstein - Development Associate, August 15, 2007 05:13 PM

Over the last year our radio and outreach projects expanded into new rural areas and evolved to meet the changing needs of local populations, bringing powerful and effective conflict resolution strategies and encouraging human rights and women’s empowerment in communities across Nepal. Because of our unique interactive listener feedback loop, content remains timely, relevant and beneficial to a maximum number of target audiences. In response to listener letters, phone calls and outreach staff field reports we increased our efforts to bring programming and outreach into the rural mid-west regions of Nepal. In fact an AC Nielsen broadcast audience survey indicated that our flagship program, Chatting with My Best Friend increased its regular audience share to over 9,100,000 listeners – capturing more than 50 percent of the total radio listening population in Nepal. In addition we facilitated multiple weeklong workshops training community leaders on issues pertaining to human rights and to effectively utilize the radio programs to build community action and group facilitation skills. A Stakeholder Workshop in 2006 brought together 64 participants for a full day of content development and tactical organization strategizing. A number of Conflict Transformation Refresher Trainings brought together a total of 242 participants in six different regions of Nepal. These network of trained individuals have become involved in multiple other projects their skills, experience and knowledge allowing them to extend their work into areas of need – building a strong, interconnected community of local advocates.
