Healthcare & Opportunity in the Hidden Himalayas

Summary

This project provides basic health care and health education in the least developed area of Nepal. There are no roads or infrastructures in Humla and the government health system is disfunctional. Maternal and child mortality rates are some of the highest in the world (<30%). More than 45000 people live in the district. The project is integrated with renewable energy and income generation projects to promote a healthier lifestyle and a secure future for, particularly, women and children. progress reportread updates from the field

More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

There is a lack of basic health services and low levels of health awareness among the population in Humla which contribute to high levels of ill-health, disease and malnutrition. The basic causes are associated with sociological, cultural, structural, political, economic issues and the lack of livelihood opportunities to break the grinding cycle of poverty. In recent years these problems have been exacerbated by political instability and armed conflict. More than 12000 people will be helped.

Activities

The aim is to promote social reconstruction by developing an improved and sustainable primary healthcare delivery system at grass-roots level, which falls within the new Government policy, paired with income generation and capacity building measures. The main focus will be on mother and child health care to provide an accessible, efficient and improved health infrastructure and services. We will raise awareness through education about health, hygiene, family planning, sanitation and nutrition.

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

More than 12000 villagers will have better access to upgraded primary healthcare services. This will reduce maternal and child mortality rates and raise general awareness of both communicable and non-communicable diseases. Health promotion and education programmes including family planning, sanitation and nutrition will help promote a healthier lifestyle. The health programme together with clean energy and income generation programmes will lead to a much healthier life for the majority.

Project Message

I learned a lot about how to use water in a good way and I will tell my mom and grandma about it. After this training I wanted to buy a tooth brush immediately, so I can brush every day from now on.

Latest Update from the Field

Another successful year in the 'Hidden Himalayas'.

By Tony Sharpe - Project Leader, December 14, 2011 06:34 PM

A Little Doctors Class
A Little Doctors Class

Winter has now descended on the villages of the Hidden Himalayas. Deep snow limits access to remote villages and the high passes are blocked to commercial and tourist travel. Flights in to Simikot are problematical depending on how well the short, dirt runway can be cleared. Nevertheless, our health clinic staff continue to provide a valuable service. Because they come from the villages they serve they have an urgent desire to help their community as best they can.

Our Little Doctors programme for 2011 is now completed and 66 young students from the villages of Kermi, Challa, Yalbang and Simikot have successfully graduated. They will now take the health knowledge and skills they have learned back to their families and friends and, hopefully, spread their knowledge. The LD programme is a unique and valuable way of spreading health education in one of the remotest regions on the planet.

The Nepal Trust is currently in discussion with two other aid organisations about collaboration and sharing resources in the health and education sector. This will avoid overlap and duplication and be more cost effective. Agreements and MoUs are being drawn up and should be in operation in early 2012.

An independent film company from Scotland, Recite Films, has donated time and effort to produce a documentary film about the work of the Trust. The film will be ready for publishing early 2012 and a link will be published in our next report.

The Nepal Trust and the people of the Hidden Himalayas would like to wish all our supporters, volunteers and friends a wonderful festive season and best wishes for 2012. We hope the year ahead will bring good health and fresh opportunities to the deprived communities of Humla.
