Peer education for youth with diabetes in the DR

Summary

Using a peer to peer education model, AYUDA educates and empowers children with type 1 diabetes to better manage their condition and lead healthier and happier lives. For a child with diabetes 'a lack of education is just as dangerous a lack of insulin'. AYUDA works with local diabetes communities to help improve access to diabetes education and resources which otherwise would not be available. progress reportread updates from the field

More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

It is estimated that 10% of the Dominican population has diabetes and a large proportion of society lives in poverty. The social inequality is reflected in the number of people who lack access to basic needs such as education, health and a good quality of life. People with diabetes do not have access to diabetes education - an important and vital aspect for managing one's condition. However, with the appropriate access to education and supplies they can lead healthier and happier lives.

Activities

Using a youth to youth model, AYUDA works hand in hand with local partner organization, Aprendiendo a Vivir based in the nation's capital Santo Domingo, to provide locally appropriate diabetes education programs for children with Type 1 diabetes and their families. The programs aim to empower young people with diabetes to better manage their condition and in turn become role models for others living with diabetes in their communities.

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

The program aims to reach the majority of youth with type 1 diabetes in the Dominican Republic, increase their diabetes knowledge and enable them to live happier and healthier lives by reducing their hospitalization rates and risk of long term complications due to diabetes. Through promoting youth leadership and civic engagement the project aims to empower new youth leaders, who in turn will support the next generation of children living with diabetes in the DR.

Project Message

"AYUDA strengthens our programs by providing current information on diabetes, human resources (young volunteers), diabetes supplies and tools...AYUDA makes our programs stronger"
- Jose Antonio Lopez, Director and Founder of Aprendiendo a Vivir

Latest Update from the Field

Update from Santo Domingo, DR (March 2012)

Alexander Estevez from AAV with AYUDA volunteers!

The last few months have been busy for the AYUDA and Aprendiendo A Vivir (AAV) teams. Members of the AYUDA team have been working closely with the AAV young leaders from the new office location (now on the 27 de Febrero) in Santo Domingo.

A young leader from AAV, Alexander Estevez, was selected to join the AYUDA volunteer training program summit in Washington DC held from March 30th to April 1st. Alexander spoke with passion to the new volunteer teams, local partners and guests about the realities of living with diabetes in the Dominican Republic and his hopes for the future given the role of AAV in his country.

Preparations are currently in place for a 10k, 5k and Zumbathon event planned for June 3rd in the Botanical Gardens in Santo Domingo to raise awareness about diabetes and encourage people to exercise (in particular given that 75% of Dominicans do not exercise regularly). The event should also serve to raise funds for the foundation's summer activities. In addition, plans are underway for June’s diabetes education programs with AYUDA planned for June and July 2012, including extended outreach activities across the country.
