More Information About this Project
Project Needs and Beneficiaries
It is estimated that 10% of the Dominican population has diabetes and a large proportion of society lives in poverty. The social inequality is reflected in the number of people who lack access to basic needs such as education, health and a good quality of life. People with diabetes do not have access to diabetes education - an important and vital aspect for managing one's condition. However, with the appropriate access to education and supplies they can lead healthier and happier lives.
Activities
Using a youth to youth model, AYUDA works hand in hand with local partner organization, Aprendiendo a Vivir based in the nation's capital Santo Domingo, to provide locally appropriate diabetes education programs for children with Type 1 diabetes and their families. The programs aim to empower young people with diabetes to better manage their condition and in turn become role models for others living with diabetes in their communities.

Why this Project is Important
Potential Long Term Impact
The program aims to reach the majority of youth with type 1 diabetes in the Dominican Republic, increase their diabetes knowledge and enable them to live happier and healthier lives by reducing their hospitalization rates and risk of long term complications due to diabetes. Through promoting youth leadership and civic engagement the project aims to empower new youth leaders, who in turn will support the next generation of children living with diabetes in the DR.
