Help Learning Disabled Adults Gain Independence

Summary

Each year PIP organises and supports disabled adults from London to attend a residential holiday on a farm for five memorable and action-packed days. Students work on the farm, taking care of and interacting with animals, participating in new activities such as apple picking, woodland exploration, cooking, and visiting local attractions. Many of our students have never been away from home, or out of London before. A holiday enables disabled people to take part in new and challenging experiences. progress reportread updates from the field

More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

Many adults with learning disabilities and mental health issues have never been on a holiday, or out of their community overnight. They are socially isolated and lack the financial resources & support to arrange something of their own. As a result, adults with learning disabilities don't interact with their communites, and don't have the opportunity to contribute in a meaningful way. This makes them less visible to the community, and new opportunities more difficult to find.

Activities

A residential holiday in an unknown setting enables adults with learning disabilities to take part in new and challenging experiences.Getting out of London is often a completely new and unknown experience, and activities are designed to increase independent living skills, broaden their life experiences, encourage development and a more creative and open approach to life. Meeting new friends is central to the experience, and the farm becomes a focal point for emotional and social development.

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

Adults with learning disabilities and mental health issues learn and develop vital new independent living skills such as cooking, cleaning and housekeeping. Taking part in new experiences also increases confidence and self-esteem. The personal relationships developed while on the farm are central to the disabled person's confidence to integrate within their communities upon return, and enable them to seek voluntary placements, work placements and employment.

Project Message

Going to Somerset farm with PIP was great. I'd never seen a horse before, it was so soft. I like getting out of London and seeing new places.

Christmas Celebrations at PIP
Christmas Celebrations at PIP

Hello PIP Friends, Family and Supporters-

PIP hopes you all had a great holiday season, wherever you spent it-warm, cold, or anywhere in between!

I'm writing to say thank you on behalf of PIP's students for your generous donations to support PIP during our recent fundraising challenge.  I'm delighted to say that we raised £3,019.00 from 78 donors during the challenge! This is a great result for us, offering us wider exposure, profile and online presence than we previously had.

Most importantly, we'll be able to support our students on a working residential holiday in Somerset!  The students LOVE going on a working holiday with PIP, and gain valuable skills, experience and respite from their everyday life.

Each donation, large, medium or small, made a great impact on PIP, and I'd like to acknowledge the generosity you all displayed on behalf of our students.

If you'd like to learn more about PIP, please contact me on any of the numbers below.  We're especially keen to know if you'd like to receive our digital newsletters or annual review.

Thanks again!
