More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

HIV/AIDS has left many children in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, without parents, and turned many young women into widows. Challenges such as economic instability and traditional views on women's rights make it difficult for these vulnerable children and families to access the help they are entitled to, from gaining inheritance to getting a place at school. Some cases are complicated; in others, a simple birth certificate is all that is needed for a child to live a better life.

Activities

ZET works with local partners in Bulawayo to provide legal advice and aid to vulnerable families, and to set up widows' associations. We train community volunteers and run workshops to raise awareness of child rights, and lobby decision makers for policy changes.

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

Our work has so far reached out to thousands of people in Bulawayo, helping widows keep their families together and children remain in school. We want to give even more children a proper childhood and education, keeping them out of poverty and away from crime, sex work and HIV infection.

Project Message

Since ZET helped us reclaim our house and land after my husband's death, I can afford for my daughters, Kimberley and Otiliah, to stay in school. Now I help ZET support other families like mine.
- L. Nyathi, Community Volunteer

We succeeded in the GG Challenge...what's next?!

By Vulindlela Mkandla - Director of ZET, February 13, 2012 01:34 PM

Hello,

This is just a quick message to let you know that ZET successfully reached the targets of the GlobalGiving Winter Challenge, and as such we now have a permanent page on the GlobalGiving site!

In light of this success we have extended the targets for this current project, and now aim to reach 100 orphans and vulnerable children and provide them with access to the basic legal documents they so desperately need. At present, the current amount raised stands at £2,690, so we are well over half way there - just £2000 short of the new target!

January also saw the first edition of the new monthly newsletter from Trinity Project Trust, whose work your donations are supporting. The following extract explains why their work is so vital:

"Sifiso is a fifteen year old girl who lives in Tsholotsho. She lives with her grandmother Thokozile and her grandfather Ntando. The whereabouts of Sifiso’s parents are not known, they left her when she was a month old. The sad thing is that when they left her, she did not have a birth certificate and up until now she doesn’t. Sifiso is in grade 5 instead of being in form 2 because she does not have a birth certificate. All along she was not going to school as schools refused to enrol her and her grandparents could not do anything to help her.

One day, Thokozile heard of TRINITY PROJECT TRUST, how they have helped and are helping people, and so she decided to go there and talk to them. She came out of the building a happy woman. All the help that she got was free because the TRUST is not there to make money but to save the nation.

Because this is a recent activity, the Trust hasn’t received feedback from Thokozile, but we do hope that in the next issue will let you know if and when Sifiso got her birth certificate."

As well as continuing to support Trinity in these works, we are also planning to send over a number of computers for their IT suite in Bulawayo this year. We currently have 7 computers which have been donated, and will be actively seeking further donations – computers, screens, keyboards etc - which can be sent along with these.

Thank you for your continued support,

Zimbabwe Educational Trust.
