More Information About this Project
Project Needs and Beneficiaries
There are 70,000 people accessing HIV care in the UK. Many will take vitamins or supplements that are claimed to help alleviate treatment side effects or increase CD4 counts. We found that 55% took some form of supplement but only 39% had discussed their use with a doctor, even though some may cause harm.
Activities
UKfAR is a member led charity, dedicated to research into life-enhancing HIV treatments and led by positive people. We would produce a definitive guide to vitamins and supplements based on the latest research. This would involve a researcher undertaking a systematic review of current evidence and collating the information. We would ensure that the information was presented accessibly, printing a further leaflet and publishing the information on our website.

Why this Project is Important
Potential Long Term Impact
People living with HIV will have accurate and up to date information on what vitamins and supplements may be beneficial and which should be avoided or could interact with their medication. This will improve quality of life and ensure their drug treatments don't fail.
Project Message
Your supplement quiz was a clever way to encourage people living with HIV to discuss vitamins with their doctor. People think that because they are natural they are safe to take.
