More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

The Limpopo province has a very high unemployment rate, and also a very big problem with poaching. The schools are badly equipped and over crowded which leads to poor education. Poor education leads to unemployment and poaching. It is a vicious circle that can only be stopped by educating the younger generation and helping them to make South Africa a better place.

Activities

We give underprivileged children the chance to experience their local environment. We inspire these children to protect their environment and introduce them to ecotourism jobs. We supplement the local school curriculum with one on one lessons and develop the children's self-confidence while diminishing the stigma of apartheid through working with international volunteers. We care for orphaned and injured wildlife while using them to teach the children responsibility and respect for animals.

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

Today's local underprivileged children will be able to secure good employment in nature reserves. The children, future custodians of nature, will be inspired to protect wildlife and their fragile environment.

Project Message

I believe the future of our environment lies in the education of our children. If people care about nature, they will look after it.
- - Ian Merrifield, ex game ranger, Director of Daktari Bush School

Mister Gucci Bijou & Bouba with Michele
Mister Gucci Bijou & Bouba with Michele

Introducing Mister Gucci Bijou, the new lovable little rogue at Daktari.

He's such a little character, and has already won the hearts of all the staff and volunteers! He's still finding his place amongst the other dogs. Bullet tolerates him, as he's too old and tired to play, he just lets him run around and do his own thing. Bouba isn't so bothered by him, he was a little jealous at first but now they snuggle up together at bedtime. Candy is so jealous, and wouldn't speak to Michele for the first few days, she's slowly coming round to the idea of a new baby brother now though, and even happily snuggled with him and Bouba last night :o)

Mirabelle, now there's a story! The one dog that we thought would be happy to have a playmate, was ABSOLUTELY TERRIFIED of the tiny new addition! Whenever Mister Gucci Bijou came near her she would put her ears back, her tail between her legs, and run away as fast as she could! It was so funny to watch! She's much better now, you can see that she's still wary, but she lets the puppy play now, and even wags her tail. By this time next week they'll be the best of friends!

Check out our facebook page for more updates and photos :o)
