Summary

The Philippi Children's Centre is an oasis in a very poor farming community in Cape Town, South Africa. The Centre currently has space for 200 children and we are raising funds to increase their capacity to help more children and ultimately become a community hub for outreach programming and development.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

The Philippi farm area's unemployment estimate is a shocking 70% and malnutrition and other social ills that go with poverty pervade. One of the most troublesome issues is the lack of access to education in the community. Severe health issues including HIV, TB, and babies suffering from fetal alcohol syndrome are on the increase and physical and sexual abuse is a regular occurrence in most households due to alcohol and drug abuse.

How will this project solve this problem?

The Philippi Children's Centre serves disadvantaged children aged two months to six years. The Centre provides transport and meals, and is taking great care to involve parents and the wider community in the running of the centre. The plan is to extend the buildings and to break down the old, dilapidated pre-fabricated part of the facility. We also are raising funds to provide scholarships to children who would not otherwise be able to afford to go to school.

Potential Long Term Impact

As education is the cornerstone for success in life, providing these children with access to a solid start can have a lasting impact on the future of the community. US nonprofit Love to Langa is partnering with South African nonprofit SASDI (Southern Africa Sustainable Development Initiative) to raise funds for this project.

Project Message

The impact of education on children's futures is indisputable and the center is testament to what a collective effort by members of the Phillippi community can accomplish.
