Summary

Daktari YEP (Youth Empowerment Program) has two focus groups; the youth in high school and the youth that just finished their matric. The main objectives for both groups is to provide empowerment, motivation and guidance, which will enable the young adults of the Limpopo region to better themselves and their future, as well as improve their standard of living and that of their families. We encourage the students to become spokes people within their community, and to set the right example.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

Limpopo has a large area of South Africa's natural resources, yet it is known to be the poorest, least educated area of the country, with the highest poaching activity. The students did a community profile as how they see their community, the problems they came up with: poverty, unemployment (estimated by the students; 40 - 50% of the people are unemployed), uneducated people, teenage pregnancy, poaching, pollution, drugs (estimated by the students; 50 - 70% of learners use drugs)) and nepotism.

How will this project solve this problem?

Work in small groups giving the students the attention they need, this encourages the creation of self-importance and development, and helps focus to work towards their goals and objectives. Supplying them with the opportunity to apply for bursaries, higher education and jobs gives them the chance to make a better future. Provide environmental education via our eco-clubs; here they learn why animals are important to the economy, how it will bring in tourism and provide them with employment.

Potential Long Term Impact

Increased future opportunities for the local underprivileged youth of Sekororo area. They developed self-esteem and found a direction in life, which will enable the young adults to better themselves and their future, as well as improve their standard of living and that of their families. The students become spokes people for alternative ways of living within their community, and to set the right example. Their words and influence will spread a positive vibe over the community.
