This project will provide nutritious food supplements for hungry children in an area of rural Kenya where a drought has caused food shortages
This project in rural eastern Kenya is treating child malnutrition in a poverty-stricken region where a drought has caused food shortages and hunger. Some families are desperately poor with no source of income. Large numbers of young children are seriously underweight and growth stunted. Some of them die from malnutrition and infections. Special food supplements that are very effective and inexpensive. Local community health workers will weigh the children regularly to monitor their growth.
In village health clinics children are weighed and measured to find those suffering most from hunger and malnutrition. Food supplements are given to the mothers of children most in need. The children are weighed regularly to monitor their progress. The desperately poor families with no income are given a food ration of beans and maiza (corn) each month.
The project will provide nutritious food supplements for the young children whose growth and development are seriously affected by malnutrition, so that they can survive until the food availability problem improves.
As a nurse of Kisesini Dispensary I see many children suffering from hunger and malnutrition, without enough food in the home. The food supplements from GHP are vital to their recovery and growth
