Increase food production and security in Mali

Villagers in the Douentza region of northern Mali suffered two years of drought, political turmoil, and occupation by rebels and extremists. Families in an already difficult environment were forced to consume their seed stock to survive. NEF is helping the most vulnerable farmers in 200 communities to recover by introducing high yielding drought-resistant seeds and helping to repair irrigation canals, wells, and community gardens.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

Ongoing drought, insecurity, and a poor agricultural harvest led to the collapse of food supplies and the displacement of many people in northern Mali. The combination has put stress on communities that already lacked sufficient food. The situation pushed many normally self-sufficient families deep into poverty, unable to recover without assistance. The occupation has ended but their struggle has not. These is a deep need for inputs such as seeds and basic tools to regain self-sufficiency.

How will this project solve this problem?

NEF has established a strong network of local partners in rural Malian communities. By working through these community-level partners to target the distribution of seed and tools, we help the most vulnerable families begin to produce adequate food and generate an income once again. By helping communities restore damaged infrastructure like wells and canals for irrigation and fencing for market gardens, we jump-start recovery and lay a foundation for long-term self-sufficiency and food security.

Potential Long Term Impact

While there is an immediate need for recovery, our goal is to build food and water security among farming communities in the Douentza region of northern Mali. We teach simple, low-cost ways to collect, store, and manage water resources. This enables a steady increase in agricultural production, self-sufficiency and resilience in the face of political and environmental uncertainty.
