Summary

Sami's Project will plant 5,000 fruit and nut trees with young children in 96 participating Moroccan schools and villages. HAF's staff along with local teachers and community leaders will discuss with students the social and environmental benefits of tree planting, raising awareness of their value. In 2013, 4 bathrooms and two teacher's housing facilities were built through Sami's. We hope to build toilets in all the rural schools that don't have any sanitary facilities. You can help.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

Rural Morocco is challenged by drought, erosion and desertification. Rural children's families are mostly subsistence farmers although this is no longer viable. Children anywhere often feel helpless in the face of local and global problems, and this initiative enables them to experience at a young age that they can make a difference. Inspired by Sami, whose short life of struggle against cancer and his love of the outdoors is now empowering so many children to become generative adults.

How will this project solve this problem?

Sami's Project engages American School students in conversations about tree planting and assisting families in need. Sami's Project increases awareness of the wide-ranging benefits (environmental, economic etc.) of fruit trees, particularly those not requiring pesticides. Students learn by doing as they plant and care for the trees. Teaching kids the benefits of planting, cultivating and protecting trees and how they sustain human life will ensure generations of proactive stewards of the earth.

Potential Long Term Impact

Enabling young people from subsistence agricultural families to understand the value of modern arboriculture that is environmentally friendly will place them in a better position to break the cycle of poverty and achieve integrated benefits, including: doubling (on average) household incomes, diversifying the economy and diets, strengthening the local environment, building technical skills, and establishing democratic processes.

Project Message

Sami's project is HAF's way of reaching out to children who do not have much. This integrated approach offers multiple benefits in a transformative and sustainable way.
- Dr. Rachid El Kouhen, Sami's father
