Provide a safe home for Haitian Orphans

Summary

This project has rented a safe house for the Hands Together to Defend the Children Orphanage in Port au Prince, Haiti after their house was destroyed in the earthquake. We're also raising money for school, food, and medical fees for the kids.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

Following the earthquake more than 1.5 million Haitians are homeless. The most vulnerable among these homeless Haitians are the children who lost their parents. Hands Together to Defend the Children Orphanage cares for 27 kids who would otherwise be homeless, but they're struggling to meet the needs of the children in their care. Since the earthquake they have more children and fewer resources, and the health and well-being of the kids is suffering.

How will this project solve this problem?

This project will provide funding for us to rent a safe home for these orphans while a permanent housing solution can be pursued on land donated to the orphanage. We'll also use money raised to provide school, health care, food, and enriching extra-curricular activities for all the kids in the orphanage's care.

Potential Long Term Impact

Moving these kids out of the unsanitary, crowded conditions where they lived for almost a year following the earthquake has massively improved their health and provide security. Their new, safe home is giving the kids a healthy, happy place to grow into tomorrow's leaders.
