Summary
Through its Future Fortified campaign, GAIN seeks to help women and children around the world gain acess to the essential nutrients they need to lead healthy, enriched lives. In the Horn of Africa, millions of women and children are in the midst of the critical 1,000 days from pregnancy to a child's second year - when propor nutrition is essential for a child's phsyical and mental development. This project will help fortify the future by ensuring healthy pregnancies and nourished children.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
An estimated 2 billion people around the world lack access to the essential nutrients they need for proper physical and cognitive development. Poor nutrition in mothers and children is the underlying cause of over 35% of all childhood deaths every year. Science has shown us that proper nutrition for pregnant women, new mothers and young children during the 1,000 days from pregnancy to their second year of life is critical to put children on the right track to grow and thrive.
How will this project solve this problem?
Ensuring adolescent girls, pregnant women and young children receive essential nutrients - such as Vitamin A, iodine, iron, zinc, and folic acid - is a proven, cost-effective way to improve the health and well-being of people and communities around the world. While millions of people do not have sustainable access to nutritious food, home nutrition packets - small packets of up to 15 essential vitamins and minerals - enable mothers to improve the quality of the food their children are consuming.
Potential Long Term Impact
Improved nutrition for pregnant women, new mothers and young children in the Horn of Africa during the 1,000 day "window of opportunity" puts children on the right track to grow up healthier, smarter and more resilient to the effects of food insecurity. Improved nutrition can also increase a country's GDP by 2-3%.
Project Message
Investments in nutrition for women and children, especially during the 1,000 day window, are critical as nutrition is the basic building block for the success of health and development interventions.
