The Meet Kate Foundation provides intelligent young people with a scholarship for 3 years to finish their high school education. These young people do not have the financial means to pay for their final years of school. School fees, boarding facilities- including food, books and pocket money is covered. With the help of a personal mentor for added support, they can gain a diploma. With this, they can get better jobs or further their education and contribute to their communities.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
In Ghana, the government provides free education for children until Junior High School. Once they reach Senior High School, their parents have to pay for everything. This is often simply not possible and Meet Kate Foundation has seen many smart, hardworking and motivated young people stay at home or work small jobs like selling on the streets to take themselves through school. Their drive has inspired us and want to help them help themselves by getting a high school diploma to better their lives
How will this project solve this problem?
Working together with the best schools in the area, Meet Kate selects highly intelligent but very needy young people for our program. We pay for a full boarding scholarship, books and pocket money. We also assign a mentor to the students. This mentor supports them academically and socially whilst preventing potential problems. After finishing their 3 year scholarship, the students will receive a high school diploma which will help him or her find a job or further their education.
Potential Long Term Impact
Often these young people are the first in their family to finish high school. This qualification allows them to find themselves better jobs or go into higher education. This will not only impact their own future, but also that of their families and community. The young people we select are very bright and furthering their education will also help them with other aspects of their development (socially and emotionally). Every child deserves a good education and the chance at a brighter future!
