Sustain income for HIV-affected women in Kibera

Summary

This project provides business training and micro-loans for women living with HIV/AIDS in the largest slum area in East Africa, addressing the challenges they face in sustaining income generating activities.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

Recent UN estimates put Kibera's population at 500,000 to 700,000 inhabitants: an estimated 12-14 per cent live with HIV/AIDS and most below the poverty line. Women are particularly vulnerable within this group; problems faced include lack of education, of entrepreneurial skills, discrimination and low self esteem.

How will this project solve this problem?

IDEWES will support HIV/AIDS-affected women in income generating activities through group-based lending and business training. The women will participate in a support group to share their experiences of challenges faced and discuss best practices. Group sessions will also be used to engage women on social issues including caring for people with HIV/AIDs, family planning, and civic education.

Potential Long Term Impact

The combination of education and microfinance will empower women to improve income and savings, self-confidence and status, and knowledge and practices among groups. As a result women will be better able to exercise their right to sexual and reproductive health, to allocate household resources, and participate in economic and social development. We expect to see growth in small businesses and progress away from poverty for borrowers .

Project Message

Thanks to this project, I have started my own grocery shop. It also helps me in stocking my goods at all times. I can now meet my family's needs and the added support will help sustain the income.
