Summary

In Africa, millions live in crowded slums. Youth survive but don't thrive. At Kibera Film School youth develop talents, tell their stories, become role models for peace and transform their communities.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

Kenya is going through a challenging transition. In August 2010, Kenya got a new constitution. Space is opening up for more freedom of expression. Yet the voices of the slum youth are not heard. Following the December 2007 general election, there was widespread violence, including in the slums. The next election is scheduled for March 2013. Slum youth are working for peace. They want to tell and share their stories. They need your support to get their voices heard using video technology.

How will this project solve this problem?

Working with talented slum youth, Hot Sun Foundation opens up the creative vent. At Kibera Film School youth are trained in all aspects of film making - scriptwriting, casting, acting, camera, sound, editing, marketing and distribution. Trainees film their stories and local events, share their films and get feedback at community screenings. Kibera Film School trainees inspire youth living in slums to tell their stories and work for peace and reconciliation.

Potential Long Term Impact

* Developing slum youth talent and creativity * Building slum youth self confidence * Changing how slum youth are viewed * Developing film industry and employment in the slums * Film school model for other slums
